Chapter 9

The city bus rumbled to a halt with a heavy hiss of pneumatic brakes, its doors sliding open to reveal a dimly lit, half-empty interior. Elena climbed aboard quickly, keeping her head lowered to avoid the driver’s curious glance. She dropped a handful of loose coins into the fare box, her hands shaking so badly the metal rattled against the glass. The driver muttered something unintelligible, glancing skeptically at her torn red dress, dirt-stained knees, and mismatched footwear, but thankfully asked no further questions as she stumbled down the aisle and collapsed onto a worn vinyl seat near the back. The bus lurched forward, pulling away from the estate's desolate stretch of highway and heading deeper into the sprawling, neon-lit grid of the downtown district. As the urban landscape closed in around them, the towering skyscrapers and bustling neon signs provided a chaotic anonymity that felt like a fortress compared to the sterile, controlled environment of Marcus’s mansion. Elena leaned her head against the cool glass window, watching the blur of city lights streak past in a kaleidoscope of color. The adrenaline that had sustained her through the escape was rapidly fading, leaving behind a profound, bone-deep exhaustion. Every muscle in her body ached from the physical trauma of the hallway confrontation and the grueling crawl through the ventilation shaft. Yet, despite the physical toll, her mind remained hyper-focused. Inside her pocket, the encrypted drive felt heavy and warm against her thigh, containing the undeniable digital truth that could dismantle Marcus and Clara’s meticulously crafted facade. But she could not simply walk into a police precinct and hand over a thumb drive. Marcus’s influence extended deep into local municipal systems; any standard report would likely be intercepted or rerouted back to him before it ever reached an impartial investigator. She needed a different kind of ally—someone outside the corrupt network of corporate elites who controlled the city's legal machinery. As the bus rattled past the central financial district, a familiar neon sign caught her eye: the glowing logo of an independent investigative journalism collective known for exposing corporate corruption and high-society cover-ups. The bus rolled to a stop at the next corner. Elena stood up, clutching her stolen evidence tightly, and stepped out into the pulsing heart of the city to begin the next phase of her fight.
