Chapter 1

The grand hallway of the estate was silent save for the harsh, uneven breathing of three people trapped in a nightmare of their own making. Elena stood over Clara, her expression a toxic mix of fury and bitter triumph. Elena’s slicked-back dark hair caught the cool light of the arched pillars, and her expensive red dress shimmered like fresh blood against the black and white checkered marble floor. In her right hand, she clutched a crimson high-heeled shoe, poised like a weapon above the battered form of Clara. Clara lay crumpled amidst a glittering sea of safety-glass shards, her light-colored dress stained and torn, her face marked by deep purple bruises. Elena’s voice cut through the stillness with a venomous hiss, accusing Clara of reveling in the chaos. Just as the tension reached its absolute breaking point, the heavy double white doors at the far end of the hallway crashed open against the wall. Marcus burst through the threshold, his black velvet tuxedo jacket fluttering behind him. His short dark hair was slightly disheveled, and his face was etched with raw, unfiltered panic. He did not hesitate, nor did he assess the full scope of the scene before acting. Marcus closed the distance between them with terrifying speed, his shout of absolute command echoing off the marble. He shoved past Elena with a brutal force that sent her sprawling hard onto the cold floor. The red shoe flew from her grip, clattering away into the shadows. Marcus immediately dropped to his knees beside Clara, his hands hovering protectively over her bruised shoulders. He glared up at Elena with an intensity that promised ruin, his voice dropping to a chilling, authoritative register as he ordered her to step away from his wife. Elena clutched her stinging cheek, staring at Marcus with an expression of profound betrayal and shock. Tears welled in her eyes, not from remorse, but from the shattering realization that Marcus had chosen a side without a second thought. Elena stammered out a desperate defense, claiming Clara had initiated the violence, but her words fell on deaf ears. Marcus refused to look at her again, his entire focus locked on tending to Clara’s immediate physical needs. Above them, mounted quietly on the vaulted ceiling, a small security camera blinked with a steady, unblinking red LED light, recording every single second of the tragedy unfolding below.
