Chapter 3

The silence returned to the grand hallway, heavy and suffocating, broken only by the soft rustle of Clara’s dress as Marcus helped her to her feet. Clara winced convincingly, leaning her full weight against Marcus’s tuxedo-clad shoulder. Her long brown hair fell across her face, partially obscuring a triumphant smile that she flashed toward Elena when Marcus momentarily looked away. Elena clenched her fists so tightly her fingernails bit sharply into her palms, drawing tiny beads of blood that she did not even feel. She remained crouched on the checkered floor, her red dress bunched around her knees, feeling utterly cornered yet intensely defiant. Marcus looked down at Elena with an expression of pure disdain, treating her not as a partner of many years, but as a dangerous intruder who needed to be neutralized. He spoke with a quiet, measured authority that carried immense weight in the cavernous space. He told Elena that her time in this house had officially run out, demanding that she pack her belongings and leave the estate before dawn. The casual cruelty of his dismissal stunned Elena more than the physical blow had. A decade of shared ambitions, sacrifices, and hidden compromises reduced to an inconvenience to be swept away. Elena slowly rose to her feet, balancing carefully on her remaining red high-heeled shoe while holding the other in her left hand. She refused to cower, lifting her chin to meet Marcus’s icy gaze without flinching. She reminded him quietly that the estate belonged to the foundation, and her name was on the charter just as much as his. Marcus scoffed softly, stepping closer to Clara as if to shield her from Elena’s voice. He whispered that the charter had been amended months ago, a legal maneuver executed quietly while Elena was distracted by her corporate duties. The realization hit Elena with physical force. She had been systematically outmaneuvered, isolated, and cornered by the two people she trusted least and knew best. Clara offered a weak, feigned gesture of conciliation, suggesting they handle this like civilized adults, but her eyes held the sharp glitter of a predator savoring a kill. Elena realized that staying in the hallway was pointless. She needed to get to the security room before Marcus locked her out of the system entirely. With a sharp turn of her heel, Elena bolted down the corridor, her hurried footsteps echoing loudly against the marble floor.
