Chapter 13

Dawn broke over the city, casting a pale, cold light across the wrought-iron gates of the grand estate as a convoy of federal vehicles and local patrol cars rolled up the long, winding drive. Elena sat in the passenger seat of Liam’s car parked just outside the perimeter wall, watching through the windshield as federal agents poured out of the vehicles and secured the property entrances. There was no resistance; Marcus’s security detail surrendered their radios and stepped aside immediately upon seeing the federal warrants. The element of absolute control that Marcus had wielded for so long had evaporated in a matter of hours. Liam looked over at Elena, asking gently if she was ready to face them, offering to accompany her onto the grounds. Elena shook her head slowly, her expression resolute and calm. This was something she had to finish on her own terms. She stepped out of the car, adjusting the collar of a borrowed coat over her ruined red dress, and walked steadily through the open gates. The grand hallway doors stood wide open, inviting the harsh, revealing daylight into the interior space where the nightmare had begun. As Elena walked across the checkered marble floor, the echoes of her footsteps sounded crisp and clear, devoid of the panic that had defined her previous passage through the room. Federal agents were already stationed near the arched pillars, and a technician was carefully unscrewing the housing of the security camera on the ceiling, preserving the physical hardware that had recorded the initial confrontation. In the center of the hallway stood Marcus and Clara, flanked by investigators. Marcus wore his black velvet tuxedo, now looking rumpled and stained by the stress of the early morning interrogation. His face was pale, his eyes wide with a mixture of disbelief and seething fury as he watched Elena approach. Clara stood beside him, clutching her light-colored dress tightly around her, her fabricated vulnerability completely stripped away by the harsh light of reality. Marcus opened his mouth to speak, his voice tight with habitual authority, demanding to know what right she had to return. Elena did not stop walking until she stood directly opposite them, her gaze steady, unflinching, and entirely devoid of fear. She looked past Marcus, right at Clara, and then met Marcus’s eyes with a quiet, profound finality that silenced any words he had prepared to say.
