Chapter 5

The glowing red warning banner on the monitor remained frozen, casting an eerie, crimson hue across Elena’s strained face. The remote wipe was thorough, leaving behind nothing but empty file paths and corrupted sector logs. Marcus had not just locked her out of the physical estate; he had cut her off from the digital infrastructure they had built together. Elena leaned heavily against the cold metal console, her chest heaving as she processed the depth of the betrayal. They had erased her proof, leaving her word against theirs in a world where Marcus held all the financial and social cards. Yet, as she stared at the blank screen, a small, blinking indicator in the corner of the console caught her attention. It was a secondary backup protocol—an analog auxiliary system that operated independently of the main network, designed to record raw video feeds directly to an encrypted, off-site cloud vault that Marcus had likely forgotten existed. Elena’s hands moved across the backup interface with renewed urgency. She entered her personal cryptographic key, a sequence known only to her, tied to her biometric signature from before their marriage. The screen flickered, and a progress bar began to crawl slowly across the display. 40 percent. 60 percent. The hallway footage was downloading to an encrypted drive she had secreted away in the lining of her clutch. Outside the steel door of the security room, a low, metallic thud echoed through the concrete stairwell. Someone was descending the stairs. Elena froze, her breath catching in her throat. The heavy footsteps were measured and deliberate, carrying the unmistakable cadence of Marcus’s stride. Accompanying them was the lighter, distinct click of heels that could only belong to Clara. They were coming for her. They knew she would try to secure the evidence, and they had come to finish what they started in the hallway. The progress bar crept painfully slowly. 80 percent. 90 percent. A heavy knock sounded against the steel door, followed by Marcus’s calm, chilling voice calling her name through the reinforced metal. He urged her to open the door peacefully, promising that things would go much easier for her if she did not resist. Elena ignored him, her eyes glued to the monitor as the progress indicator hit 100 percent. A small chime confirmed the download was complete. Without hesitation, Elena reached down, ejected the tiny encrypted drive from the port, and slipped it safely into her pocket. The knocking on the door grew heavier, accompanied by the sound of an override keypad being punched into the exterior lock. Time had officially run out. Elena spun around, scanning the server room for another exit, her eyes locking onto the high, narrow ventilation shaft near the ceiling that led out toward the estate’s overgrown sculpture garden.
