Chapter 7

The ventilation shaft finally sloped downward, ending in a rusted louvered vent that opened directly into the overgrown sculpture garden at the rear of the estate. Elena pushed against the metal slats with her shoulder, the rusted hinges snapping under her weight as she tumbled out into the cool night air. She landed hard on a bed of damp mulch, her red heels sinking deep into the soil. Gasping for oxygen, she scrambled to her feet, brushing dirt and cobwebs from her slicked-back dark hair and torn red dress. The garden was a chaotic maze of overgrown boxwood hedges, weeping willows, and classical marble statues partially obscured by ivy. It was the one part of the estate that Marcus had neglected, preferring the manicured lawns near the front entrance, making it the ideal place to hide from patrolling guards. In the distance, the sharp sound of exterior alarms began to wail, piercing the quiet night. The security system had finally registered the unauthorized extraction from the archive. Lights flickered on along the back terrace of the mansion, casting long, menacing shadows across the lawn. Elena crouched low behind a large, moss-covered statue of a Greek muse, trying to regulate her ragged breathing. She knew she had mere minutes before the private security detail swept the grounds. Her ankle throbbed from the fall, and the absence of her right shoe made walking across the uneven terrain excruciating, but adrenaline kept the pain at bay. She needed to reach the perimeter wall, where an old maintenance gate offered a blind spot in the surveillance grid. As she crept stealthily along the edge of the hedge maze, the crunch of gravel nearby made her freeze in place. A pair of security guards in dark uniforms rounded the corner of the pavilion, flashlights sweeping methodically across the shrubbery. Elena pressed her back flat against a thick boxwood wall, holding her breath as the beam of light danced dangerously close to her face. The guards paused, murmuring into their shoulder radios about a system breach originating near the subterranean archive. Their footsteps crunched closer, stopping just a few feet away from her hiding spot. Elena’s hand drifted to her pocket, her fingers curling around the encrypted drive. If they found her here, there would be no trial, no negotiation, and no escape. They would simply detain her under the guise of an intruder, handing her back over to Marcus and Clara to be permanently silenced. The guards shone their lights directly into the hedge opening where she stood, the brilliant white beam illuminating the dust motes swirling in the air right in front of her face.
