Chapter 9 - The Sirens Outside

The heavy silence that followed Emily’s words felt dense enough to touch. Victoria’s triumphant smirk vanished instantly, replaced by a flash of genuine panic that she scrambled desperately to conceal beneath her icy facade. Attorney Sterling’s polite smile dropped entirely, his hand tightening over the small electronic device in his pocket as he whipped his head around to stare toward the front doors.
From down the long cobblestone driveway, faint but unmistakable, the rising wail of police sirens pierced the sunny morning air.
"You stupid little—” Victoria hissed, lunging forward with her hand raised to strike Emily across the face.
Before Victoria’s fingers could connect, Julian caught her wrist in a crushing grip, his dark eyes blazing with a fury that made even the calculating lawyer step back.
"Don't you ever touch her," Julian snarled, shoving Victoria backward so hard she stumbled against the polished marble pillar.
"Julian, you absolute fool!" Victoria screamed, her composed mask shattering into jagged pieces as she clutched her bruised wrist. "If I go down, I take everything! The house, the accounts, the boys—you'll be left with nothing!"
"You already took everything that mattered," Julian replied, his voice deadly calm as he stared down at his deceitful wife with pure revulsion.
The wail of the sirens grew deafeningly loud, the flashing red and blue lights painting the grand brick exterior of the mansion in harsh, urgent strokes. Two black-and-white police cruisers swept up the cobblestone drive in a dramatic arc, slamming to a halt right behind Attorney Sterling’s parked town car.
Car doors flew open, and four uniformed officers, led by a stern-faced detective with silver temples, poured out onto the veranda. The heavy oak doors were pushed fully open, and the lead detective strode into the grand foyer, his hand resting instinctively near his holster.
"Police! Nobody move!" Detective Vance—no relation to Julian—demanded, his sharp eyes sweeping over the tense group in the foyer. He locked eyes with Julian first, then shifted his gaze to Victoria and the lawyer. "We received an anonymous 911 dispatch regarding child endangerment, asset fraud, and potential homicide concealment at this address."
Attorney Sterling immediately stepped forward, his professional composure partially restored as he reached slowly into his suit jacket. "Detective, I am Attorney Sterling. There has been a complete misunderstanding. This is a civil domestic dispute—"
"Save it, Counselor," Emily interrupted, stepping forward and placing the worn vintage suitcase on the floor beside her. She reached into the front pocket of her dark blue maid uniform and pulled out the crisp, ink-stained diary page she had recovered from the secret room. "He has fraudulent documents, but the real evidence of what happened to Catherine Vance is located behind the brick wall in the basement."
Detective Vance turned his sharp gaze toward Emily, taking in her severe bun, yellow gloves, and unwavering posture. "Who are you?"
"I am Emily Vance—no relation," she corrected firmly. "I have worked in this house for five years. And I know where the late Mrs. Vance’s body was hidden."
Victoria let out a sharp, hysterical laugh, pointing a trembling finger at Emily. "She’s insane! She stole family heirlooms and fabricated the whole story because we fired her this morning!"
Detective Vance ignored Victoria, stepping closer to Emily. "Show me."
Julian nodded grimly, stepping aside to clear the path toward the basement stairwell. "She’s telling the truth, Detective. I saw the hidden room myself."
As the officers moved to secure the perimeter and descend into the dark cellar, Emily felt a cold breeze sweep in through the open front doors. But as she watched the detective pull out his flashlight and step toward the stairs, a sudden, chilling realization hit her.

The diary page in her hand wasn't the only piece of evidence left behind in that room. And the person who had locked the children in the cellar wasn't acting alone.
