Chapter 3 - The Descent into Shadows

The damp, metallic scent of the cellar hit them like a physical blow as Julian descended the concrete steps, his expensive leather shoes clicking sharply against the cold floor. Emily followed closely behind, the three boys refusing to let go of her dark blue skirt, hiding their tear-streaked faces against her uniform with every step they took. Victoria lingered at the threshold of the basement door, her designer heels trembling against the polished marble of the main hallway.

"Come down here, Victoria," Julian’s voice echoed hollowly from the darkness below. "See what your discipline looks like in the light."

Emily reached the bottom of the stairs and flicked on the auxiliary wall lantern. The warm, flickering yellow light pushed back the heavy shadows, revealing a cramped stone room lined with wooden crates and forgotten furniture. But it was the far corner that instantly made Emily’s breath catch in her throat. A heavy iron padlock hung open from a makeshift wooden latch bolted directly into the old stone wall, and scattered across the dusty floor were discarded juice boxes, a torn blanket, and several crude drawings done in green crayon.

Leo whimpered softly, pressing his small, dirty face against Emily’s yellow-gloved hand. "She made us stay there for two whole days," he whispered, his voice trembling uncontrollably. "She said if we told Daddy about the missing silver, she would throw Miss Emily in the river."

Julian stared at the drawings on the floor, his tall frame trembling with a rage so profound it seemed to suck all the oxygen out of the cramped basement. He slowly turned around, his eyes bloodshot and wide with a horrifying realization. He had trusted Victoria. He had believed her lies about the missing heirlooms, believing that Emily, his most loyal servant of five years, had betrayed his household out of greed.

"Victoria," Julian roared, his voice bouncing off the damp stone walls with terrifying force.

He didn't wait for her to answer. He stormed back up the concrete stairs, his heavy footsteps shaking the wooden floorboards overhead. Emily stood in the center of the cellar, her gaze sweeping over the grim enclosure. Her eyes landed on a small, heavy wooden chest pushed partially beneath a dusty storage shelf. Unlike the surrounding clutter, the chest had a shiny brass padlock on it, and resting on top of it was a familiar velvet jewelry pouch embroidered with the Vance family crest—the very pouch Victoria claimed Emily had stolen.

"Wait here, boys," Emily instructed softly, stepping away from the children.

She knelt down in the dust and reached for the velvet pouch. As her fingers brushed the soft fabric, she noticed something else protruding from beneath the wooden chest—the corner of a thick, leather-bound journal with gold-leaf lettering. Emily’s heart skipped a beat as she recognized the handwriting on the bookmark trailing from the pages. It was the personal diary of Julian’s late first wife, Catherine, who had mysteriously vanished from the estate two years prior.

Before Emily could pull the journal completely out into the light, a piercing, blood-curdling scream echoed from the grand foyer upstairs.

Emily dropped the pouch, her heart pounding against her ribs like a trapped bird.

"Stay here!" she commanded the boys, sprinting toward the stairs as fast as her sensible shoes would carry her.
