Chapter 1 - The Breaking Point

The sharp gravel crunched beneath Emily’s sensible shoes as she marched down the sunlit cobblestone driveway of the grand brick mansion. Her dark hair was pulled back in a severe bun, and her bright yellow cleaning gloves felt heavy against her fingers. In her left hand, she gripped the handle of a worn vintage suitcase, its scuffed leather a stark contrast to the sprawling wealth behind her. Three frantic boys burst through the heavy oak doors, their faces smudged with dirt and hair wildly disheveled, tearing down the steps to intercept her.
"Miss Emily, wait!" the oldest boy shouted, his voice cracking with panic.
Emily stopped dead in her tracks, her breath catching in her throat as she slowly pivoted around. The boys collided with her waist, wrapping their arms tightly around her dark blue maid uniform with desperate, frantic strength.
"Miss Emily, don't leave us, please!" the middle boy sobbed, burying his tear-stained face into the fabric of her skirt.
Before Emily could find her voice to comfort them, heavy footsteps pounded against the stone. Julian Vance sprinted down the drive, his white button-up shirt collar undone, his dark suit jacket fluttering behind him. His face was a mask of sheer panic and utter confusion.
"Boys, what is the meaning of this?" Julian demanded, his voice echoing off the manicured hedges. He stopped short, chest heaving, his dark eyes darting from his sons to the vintage suitcase resting on the ground.
Leo, the youngest, pressed his face hard against Emily’s wool-wrapped arm, his shoulders shaking with genuine grief as dirt and tears smeared across his skin.
"Daddy... Miss Emily didn't take it!" Leo wailed, pointing a trembling, grimy finger back toward the grand entrance of the house.
Julian froze, a flicker of dark realization clouding his features. High on the portico, Victoria stood framed by the white pillars. The blonde woman in the pink strapless dress looked frozen in place, a trembling hand pressed flat against her chest, her expression entirely horror-stricken. Emily stared straight at Victoria, her eyes narrowing with a quiet, dangerous fury. Julian slowly turned around to face his new wife, his expression darkening into a terrifying, cold rage.

"Victoria," Julian whispered, his voice dangerously low as he took a threatening step back toward the house. "What did they just say?"
