Chapter 7 - The Gate Opens

The sharp electronic chime echoed down the stairwell like a gunshot, shattering the suffocating silence of the hidden room. Julian didn't move; he remained slumped against the concrete wall, his fingers dug deep into his dark hair, his face twisted in a mask of agonizing realization.
"The gate," Julian whispered, his voice cracking violently. "Who could be opening the gate? Victoria is already gone... or is she?"
Emily stood up from the dusty floor, clutching the recovered diary page tightly in her yellow-gloved hand. Her mind raced through the impossible timeline of the household. Victoria had played the grieving, panicked stepmother just minutes ago, but the sudden movement in the cellar, the missing journal, and now the security system override pointed to a chilling truth: Victoria had never intended to truly flee the estate. She had accomplices, or worse, she was merely a pawn in a much darker game orchestrated long before she ever wore a pink dress down the aisle.
"Stay here, Mr. Vance," Emily commanded, her voice cutting through his despair with absolute authority.
"Emily, no, it's dangerous—" Julian started, struggling to push himself up from the floor.
"Your sons are upstairs alone," Emily interrupted sharply, spinning on her heel and marching out of the hidden alcove.
She climbed the concrete steps two at a time, bursting back into the sunlit expanse of the grand foyer. The three boys were huddled together near the base of the staircase, clutching one another in terror as they stared toward the massive front doors. Through the beveled glass panels, a sleek black town car could be seen idling slowly up the cobblestone driveway, its headlights cutting through the bright morning sun like predatory eyes.
"Miss Emily!" Leo cried out, running forward and grabbing the hem of her dark blue uniform. "A car is coming up the drive! Is it the police?"
Emily knelt down, placing her hands firmly on the boy’s trembling shoulders, forcing herself to maintain a calm, unshakeable exterior for their sake.
"Look at me, Leo," Emily said softly, locking eyes with the terrified child. "Everything is going to be all right. I need you and your brothers to go into the butler’s pantry right now, lock the heavy door behind you, and do not open it for anyone except me or your father. Do you understand?"
The oldest boy nodded fiercely, wiping his nose with his sleeve, and quickly marshaled his brothers toward the safety of the pantry corridor.
Emily stood back up just as the heavy oak front doors swung open on their own accord. Stepping across the threshold was not a police officer, nor was it Victoria. It was a tall, impeccably dressed man in a charcoal-gray suit, carrying a sleek leather briefcase and wearing a calm, chillingly polite smile that didn't reach his cold eyes.
"Good morning," the man said smoothly, his voice echoing in the grand foyer. "I am Attorney Sterling. I believe Mr. Vance is expecting me to finalize the emergency estate transfer."
Emily’s eyes narrowed into dangerous slits. She planted her feet firmly on the marble floor, blocking the path to the stairs.
"Mr. Vance is busy," Emily replied coldly, her hand resting near the vintage suitcase she had left by the stairs. "And there is no estate left to transfer."
Attorney Sterling’s polite smile didn't waver, but his eyes flashed with sudden, calculating menace. He took a slow step forward into the foyer, pulling a folded legal document from his breast pocket.
"I'm afraid, Miss Emily, that you are severely mistaken," Sterling said smoothly. "Mr. Vance signed the full power of attorney over to Mrs. Vance yesterday morning. And by extension, it now belongs to my firm."
Before Emily could reply, Julian stumbled out of the basement stairwell behind her, his face pale and contorted with fury.
"I never signed any power of attorney," Julian roared, stepping past Emily and pointing a shaking finger at the lawyer. "Get off my property before I have you removed!"
May you like
Sterling chuckled softly, unfolding the document and holding it out for them to see. Across the bottom of the page, written in clean, undeniable ink, was Julian’s signature—alongside a witness signature that made Emily’s blood run instantly cold.
