Chapter 13 - The Second Key

The metallic clatter echoed sharply off the high vaulted ceilings, sounding like a small coin or a key dropping onto the polished hardwood of the upper landing. Julian snapped his head upward, his hand instinctively reaching out to shield his youngest son behind his leg.
"Who's up there?" Julian demanded, his voice echoing hollowly in the cavernous foyer. "The police cleared the entire second floor!"
Emily stared up at the sweeping mahogany staircase, her hand instinctively resting against the heavy brass key hidden in her apron pocket. The sunlit shadows stretching across the second-floor landing twisted into long, distorted shapes, hiding the doorways of the master suites where Catherine Vance had lived—and where Victoria had ruled.
"Stay here," Emily instructed quietly, stepping past Julian before he could protest.
She released her grip on her vintage suitcase, leaving it standing like a lonely sentinel by the front door, and began to climb the grand staircase. Every step creaked softly under her sensible shoes, the sound magnified in the tense silence of the mansion. The boys whimpered softly below, but Julian hushed them, his eyes locked anxiously on Emily’s back.
Emily reached the top landing, the air growing noticeably cooler the deeper she moved into the private wing. She scanned the long hallway lined with ornate portrait frames of Vance ancestors—men and women whose cold, painted eyes seemed to follow her every movement.
A few feet away, resting directly in the center of the Persian runner rug, lay a small, tarnished silver key with an intricate, old-fashioned barrel bit.
Emily approached it cautiously, her eyes scanning the dark, open doorways of the master bedroom suite on her left. She knelt down and picked up the key. It was ice-cold to the touch, and etched into the silver bow was a small, fading monogram: C.V. — Catherine Vance.
It wasn't a modern security key, nor did it belong to Victoria's collection. It was an antique, designed to fit an old-style mortise lock. But none of the doors on the second floor used such a key.
