Chapter 4 - Shattered Glass and Silence

Emily burst out of the basement stairwell and stumbled into the sunlit expanse of the grand foyer, her eyes instantly scanning the polished marble floor. Julian was standing motionless near the sweeping mahogany staircase, his hands hovering uselessly in the air. A few feet away, a massive, shattered crystal vase lay in a sparkling heap of jagged shards, its expensive contents of fresh white lilies trampled into the carpet.

Victoria was nowhere to be seen, but the heavy front doors stood wide open, letting in a sharp, sudden gust of autumn wind.

"Julian?" Emily called out cautiously, her grip tightening on the vintage suitcase she had left near the base of the stairs.

Julian slowly turned his head, his face entirely drained of color. He looked older, broken by a sudden realization that transcended simple marital betrayal. His lips parted, but no sound came out for several seconds. When he finally spoke, his voice was a broken whisper.

"She didn't just lock them in the cellar, Emily," Julian said, his eyes glassy and unseeing as he pointed a trembling finger toward the open front doors. "She had a bag packed in the coat closet. All of Catherine’s jewelry... it’s all gone."

Emily’s blood ran cold. The missing silver was never the real issue. Victoria had used the fabricated theft as a desperate distraction to cover her own tracks while cleaning out the estate's true historical valuables—treasures belonging exclusively to the Vance family lineage.

"Mr. Vance, we need to call the authorities immediately," Emily said, stepping forward with absolute authority. "She couldn't have gotten far on foot, and the estate gates are locked from the main security desk."

Julian let out a dry, humorless laugh, shaking his head slowly. "The security codes... she changed them yesterday. I thought it was just part of her new household management system. She locked us in digitally before she even touched the physical locks."

A sudden heavy thud echoed from the upper hallway, followed by the tentative patter of small footsteps. The three boys peered fearfully around the banister, their wide eyes taking in the destruction of the foyer.

"Miss Emily? Is she gone?" the oldest boy asked, his voice shaking.

"Yes, boys, she is gone," Emily said gently, walking over to the stairs and extending a comforting hand to guide them down. "You are safe now. No one is ever going to lock you away again."

As the boys descended into the foyer, stepping carefully around the broken crystal, Emily’s mind raced back to the basement. She hadn't told Julian about the leather-bound journal she found hidden beneath the wooden chest. The diary of Catherine Vance—a woman the town believed had simply run away to Europe—was sitting right down there in the dark, waiting to reveal a truth far more sinister than stolen jewelry.

Julian knelt down to pull his sons into a desperate, smothering embrace, tears finally spilling over his dark lashes. Emily stood quietly to the side, watching the grieving father hold his neglected children. But as she glanced back toward the open cellar door, a cold shadow fell across the threshold.
