Chapter 2 - Echoes in the Foyer

The suffocating silence on the grand front steps felt heavier than the ornate wrought-iron chandeliers hanging inside the manor. Julian Vance stood frozen halfway between his weeping sons and his new bride, his chest rising and falling in sharp, violent jerks. Victoria’s manicured hand remained pressed flat against her chest, her fingers trembling against the expensive silk of her pink dress like trapped butterflies.
"Julian, please," Victoria whispered, her voice a fragile, trembling chord that barely carried across the stone veranda. "Don't listen to them. The children are lying. They are hysterical because she is leaving."
"Lying?" Leo screamed, pulling away from Emily’s skirts and pointing a dirt-caked finger directly at his stepmother. "You locked us in the dark cellar! You said if we made a sound, Miss Emily would go to prison forever!"
Emily stepped forward, the vintage suitcase sliding an inch across the cobblestones. Her face, usually a mask of professional compliance, was now carved from cold stone.
"The cellar, Mrs. Vance?" Emily’s voice cut through the morning air like a surgical blade. "The same cellar where the family silver was supposedly hidden yesterday? The very theft you blamed me for just twenty minutes ago?"
Julian snapped his head toward Victoria, his dark eyes locking onto hers with a terrifying intensity. The illusion of domestic perfection they had maintained for six months evaporated in a single heartbeat.
"Did you lock them in the cellar, Victoria?" Julian demanded, taking a slow, menacing step up the granite stairs.
"I only wanted to teach them discipline!" Victoria shrieked, the mask finally slipping completely, revealing the frantic panic underneath. "They ruined our reception! They are wild animals who need to be broken!"
"They are my sons," Julian hissed, his voice dropping an octave into a register that made even Emily step back.
Before Victoria could retreat into the safety of the foyer, Julian stormed past her, shoving open the heavy oak doors. The children clutched tightly to Emily’s uniform, burying their faces once more as the echoes of a broken family bounced off the marble walls. Emily looked down at the boys, a heavy dread settling into her stomach. This wasn't just a simple cruel punishment; the cellar held secrets far darker than misplaced silver.
"Come inside, boys," Emily whispered firmly, her eyes fixed on the dark corridor ahead.
Victoria stumbled backward into the hallway, her face draining of all color as Julian began to pull open the heavy mahogany door leading down to the basement.
"Julian, wait, you don't know what is down there," Victoria gasped, lunging forward to grab his arm.
Julian shrugged her off violently, his jaw clenched so tight a muscle ticked rapidly in his cheek. He reached for the iron ring of the cellar door and yanked it open, releasing a stale, freezing draft that smelled of damp earth and old forgotten fears.
"We are going to find out right now," Julian said coldly. He flicked the wall switch, illuminating the steep concrete stairs leading down into the pitch-black abyss.

Emily gripped the handle of her vintage suitcase tighter, sensing that the nightmare had only just begun.
