Chapter 8

The tenth-floor boardroom of Vance Global Logistics was charged with palpable tension. The massive mahogany conference table could seat thirty, but today every chair was occupied by senior executives, legal counsel, and nervous board members whispering among themselves. At the center of the wall-mounted screens, financial news anchors dissected the morning's breaking scandal with ruthless glee.

At precisely 9:00 AM, the double doors swung open. Beatrice Vance strode into the room wearing an immaculate charcoal Chanel suit, her blonde hair pulled back into a severe chignon that radiated cold ambition. She walked with the measured, predatory grace of someone who believed she had finally won the war of succession.

Arthur Vance sat at the head of the table, flanked by Walter. His face was a mask of stoic resignation. Julian was nowhere to be seen, having been banished to a secure holding room downstairs under the watchful eye of private security.

Beatrice took her seat opposite her father, folding her hands neatly on the polished wood. A thin, triumphant smile played across her lips. "Good morning, gentlemen. I trust everyone has seen the unfortunate headlines regarding my brother's moral collapse. As the senior vice president of operations, I am prepared to assume the interim presidency immediately to restore market confidence."

Arthur looked at his daughter, his eyes devoid of any paternal warmth. "You move quickly, Beatrice. Almost as if you knew the photograph was going to surface last night."

Beatrice’s smile didn't falter, though a flicker of unease crossed her eyes. "Father, the media circus is tearing our stock apart. This isn't the time for family paranoia; this is the time for decisive leadership. If you oppose my ascension today, the board will call for an immediate vote of no confidence against you as well."

"We aren't opposing you, my dear," Walter interjected smoothly, sliding a heavy leather folder across the table toward her. "In fact, your father insists upon it. All we require is your signature on the emergency assumption of duties document, acknowledging full fiduciary responsibility for the current corporate ledger."

Beatrice glanced down at the papers. She didn't read the fine print; she was too eager to grasp the scepter of power she had coveted for a decade. With a flourish, she picked up her Montblanc pen and scrawled her signature across the dotted line.

Arthur watched the ink dry with absolute stillness. "The signature is registered and timestamped," he said quietly, looking at Walter.

Beatrice frowned, sensing a sudden shift in the room's atmosphere. "What is the meaning of this tone, Father? The crisis is averted. Julian is out, I am in."

"The crisis has only just begun, Beatrice," Arthur replied, standing up slowly and leaning on his cane. "Only it’s not Julian heading to federal custody this morning. It’s you."
