Chapter 6

The morning sun broke over the Manhattan skyline, casting long, sharp shadows across the floor-to-ceiling windows of the Fifth Avenue townhouse. The digital clock on the mahogany desk blinked 7:30 AM. Outside, the city was already bustling with yellow cabs and commuters rushing toward their morning coffee, completely unaware of the financial tectonic plates shifting beneath their feet.

Julian sat at the edge of the leather sofa, his clothes rumpled from the night before, his mind numb from lack of sleep. The door opened quietly, and corporate counsel Walter Vance—no relation, but a lifelong legal bulldog for the family—stepped into the room carrying a thick leather briefcase. Walter’s graying temples and razor-sharp suit bespoke decades of ruthless litigation.

"The morning papers are already digital," Walter said without preamble, placing his tablet on the desk. The screen flashed with the glaring headline: VANCE DYNASTY SCANDAL: PRESIDENT’S SECRET LIFE EXPOSED AT GALA. Below the bold text was a high-resolution screenshot of the portrait from the previous night, featuring Julian and Clara in that compromised embrace.

Arthur didn't even look at the tablet. He was staring out the window, his posture rigid. "And the stock futures?"

"Pre-market trading opened down four percent," Walter replied smoothly, opening his briefcase and sliding a stack of documents across the mahogany surface toward Elena. "Good morning, Elena. I'm sorry the circumstances are so grim, but we need your signature on these retainer agreements and the preliminary divorce filing before the media circus arrives at your doorstep."

Elena walked over to the desk, her fingers hovering over the crisp legal paper. She looked up at Walter, then cast a sideways glance at Julian, who looked like a ghost of the man she had married three years ago. "And what does this mean for me, Walter? Beyond the philanthropy board?"

"It means complete financial independence," Walter explained, tapping a paragraph with his manicured index finger. "Upon filing uncontested on the grounds of irreconcilable differences and public humiliation, you receive full title to the Hamptons estate, a lump-sum settlement of fifteen million dollars, and absolute immunity from any future liabilities related to Julian's corporate restructuring."

Julian stood up abruptly, knocking his chair backward. "You're paying her off to testify against me? This is a conspiracy! You're turning my own wife into an executioner!"

"Sit down, Julian," Walter said coldly, not even bothering to look up. "Your father owns seventy percent of the voting shares. I represent the corporation, not your fragile ego. If Elena doesn't file this way, the shareholders will sue for gross negligence, and we'll all be bankrupt by Friday."

Elena took the fountain pen Walter offered her. The nib hovered over the signature line. The weight of the world rested on the tip of that small gold nib. She thought of the lonely nights in the penthouse while Julian was allegedly tracking European markets, the endless parties where she had played the ornamental trophy wife, and the sheer audacity of Beatrice’s betrayal. She looked at Julian one last time, seeing not a husband, but a stranger who had built his life on a foundation of sand.
