Chapter 5

The grandfather clock struck two in the morning, but none of them had moved from the study. The room was thick with the scent of old paper, leather, and the lingering tension of unspoken ultimatums. Arthur poured three fingers of neat scotch into a crystal tumbler, swirling the amber liquid before setting it down untouched on the edge of his desk.
"Elena," Arthur said softly, his voice carrying an unusual weight of respect. "What you experienced tonight was humiliating. I do not expect you to forgive Julian, nor do I expect you to maintain the charade of our marriage for the sake of society. But I am asking you to stand with us until the market opens tomorrow at nine."
Elena crossed her legs, leaning back into the cushions of the armchair. Her eyes flicked toward Julian, who looked smaller than ever beneath the harsh light of the desk lamp. "And what happens at nine o'clock, Arthur? When the headlines break across every financial blog in the country? When the board of directors calls an emergency session to demand Julian's resignation?"
"At nine o'clock," Arthur replied evenly, "we don't defend Julian. We throw him to the wolves—temporarily—while we freeze Beatrice out of the voting trust."
Julian sat upright so fast his chair groaned in protest. "You're sacrificing me? After everything I've done to keep this company afloat through the supply chain crisis?"
"Quiet, Julian," Arthur commanded, his voice slicing through the air like a scalpel. "You brought this upon yourself through your indiscretions. Beatrice set the trap, but you stepped into it with both feet. The only way to salvage the company's valuation is to demonstrate that the Vance family tolerates zero corruption or moral failing—starting with you. You will step down as president, effective immediately."
Elena watched the exchange with cold fascination. The ruthless pragmatism of the Vance patriarch was breathtaking. He was willing to sacrifice his own son to protect his beloved empire from a hostile takeover led by his daughter. It was Machiavellian, brilliant, and utterly devoid of human warmth.
"And where do I fit into this theatrical display of corporate penance?" Elena asked, her voice steady.
"You file for divorce," Arthur said without missing a beat. "You claim you were completely blindsided by Julian's double life. The public will sympathize with you. You will become the wronged heroine, and under the prenuptial agreement drafted by my lawyers three years ago, your silence and cooperation will be rewarded with a controlling stake in Vance Philanthropies, giving you immense independent wealth and public adoration."

Julian stared at his father in absolute horror. "You've planned this. You had the prenup ready. You've been waiting for an excuse to push me out, haven't you?"
Arthur did not answer, but his silence was an admission more damning than any confession. Elena stood up, smoothing her dress once more. The satin rustled quietly in the silent room. She looked down at Julian, her expression completely unreadable.
