Chapter 1

The crystal chandelier above the private dining room trembled as the heavy sound of shattering glass echoed against the panoramic glass walls of the high-rise restaurant. Shards of ruby-red vintage cabernet scattered across the imported Italian marble floor, catching the brilliant neon reflection of the city skyline below. Julian Vance stood frozen amidst the debris, his chest heaving under his unbuttoned white dress shirt, his eyes wide with a terrifying realization. The heavy silence that followed was suffocating, broken only by the ambient hum of the ventilation system and the distant sirens wailing far down on the illuminated streets of Manhattan.
Elena Vance stood just inches away, her stunning silhouette framed by the glittering city lights. Her long dark brown hair cascaded over the shimmering fabric of her sleeveless satin blue dress, catching the amber glow of the wall sconces. Her statement necklace and dangling earrings caught the light, gleaming like icy daggers. She did not raise her voice; her anger was far too deep for screaming. Her finger remained extended toward the large mahogany-framed portrait leaning against the base of the mahogany sideboard, a photograph that had just been violently unveiled from behind a decorative privacy screen by an anonymous tipster moments before.
Arthur Vance, patriarch of the Vance media empire, lowered his hand from where he had just hurled his crystal glass. His classic black tuxedo and immaculate bow tie seemed suddenly too tight, constricting his breathing as he glared down at his kneeling son. The guests seated at the surrounding tables whispered frantically, their black-tie attire contrasting sharply with the raw, domestic wreckage unfolding before them. They had come for a celebration of corporate merger and familial stability, but they had found themselves trapped in a public execution of trust.
Julian swallowed hard, his throat dry as sandpaper. He glanced down at the canvas, then up at his father, whose face had gone pale with a mixture of rage and profound disappointment. The woman in the portrait—a blonde socialite whose identity was whispered among the elite—stared back with a vacant, knowing smirk. Julian knew the trap was absolute. There was no escaping the visual proof, nor the calculated timing of its delivery.
"That’s my wife, isn't it? Ask your son," Julian managed to force out, his voice cracking slightly despite his desperate attempt to maintain his composure. He stood up slowly, his knees shaking beneath his dark trousers, feeling every eye in the room burning into his skin.

Arthur stepped closer, his boots crunching on the spilled wine and broken glass. "You brought this disgrace into my home," Arthur whispered, his voice trembling with suppressed fury. "You thought your games would remain hidden beneath the Vance name."
Elena turned her back to the portrait, her posture rigid. She looked at her father-in-law, acknowledging the alliance that had just formed between them. She was no longer just the neglected socialite wife; she was the prosecutor in a trial that Julian could never hope to win. The glittering night outside offered no comfort, only a reminder of how high they had climbed, and how far there was left to fall.
