Chapter 7

The scratch of the fountain pen against the heavy bond paper sounded agonizingly loud in the quiet study. Elena signed her name with deliberate, elegant strokes, each letter sharp and resolute. When she finished, she placed the cap back onto the pen with a satisfying click that signaled the end of an era.
Walter pulled the papers back toward him, checking each signature with clinical precision before sliding them into his briefcase. "Thank you, Elena. You've ensured the survival of the firm, and safeguarded your own future. My car is waiting downstairs to take you to your lawyer's office to finalize the public statement."
Elena did not look back at Julian as she walked toward the heavy oak doors. "Goodbye, Julian. I hope you find whatever it is you were looking for in that bed."
The door clicked shut behind her, leaving only the two men in the room. Julian stood frozen, his fists clenched at his sides, his breath coming in shallow gasps. The betrayal was complete. His wife had taken the exit strategy offered by his father, leaving him stranded on the sinking ship of his own making.
Arthur finally turned away from the window, walking slowly toward his son. There was no pity in the old man's eyes, only the cold calculus of a survivor who had buried competitors, partners, and family members alike to maintain his throne.
"You're finished at Vance Global, Julian," Arthur said quietly. "Effective nine o'clock, the board will announce your resignation due to 'personal health reasons.' Beatrice will take over the interim presidency, exactly as she planned."
Julian let out a bitter, humorless laugh. "You're handing the keys of the kingdom to the very person who stabbed us in the back? Have you lost your mind, Dad? Beatrice hates everything you've built. She’ll sell off the Asian ports by the end of the quarter just to spite your memory!"
"I haven't lost my mind, Julian; I've laid a trap," Arthur replied, a chilling smile touching the corners of his mouth. "Beatrice thinks she outmaneuvered us with that photograph. She thinks the scandal is her ticket to absolute control. But she doesn't know about the offshore audit trail I initiated three months ago when her spending became erratic."

Julian blinked, confusion warring with dawning comprehension. "What audit trail?"
"The one that proves she embezzled four million dollars from the pension fund to finance her hostile takeover attempt," Arthur said smoothly, walking back to his desk and picking up his scotch glass. He took a slow sip, savoring the burn. "When she assumes the interim presidency at nine o'clock, she will legally sign off on the consolidated accounts. The moment she signs, the embezzlement becomes an active federal offense committed while holding corporate office. No golden parachute. No family mercy. Just federal prison."
