CHAPTER 7: SHADOWS OF THE PAST

As weeks passed, Elena and Sophie stayed under Vincent’s protection. Elena recovered her health, and Sophie’s laughter began to fill the quiet, once-gloomy halls of the mansion.

Vincent found himself changing. He spent less time in smoke-filled backrooms and more time at the estate. He taught Sophie how to play chess; she taught him how to smile again.

Marcus approached Vincent in his study late one evening. ""Boss, Dominic is making moves. He feels humiliated by what happened at the warehouse. He’s rallying some of the younger capos who think you've gone soft.""

""Let them talk, Marcus,"" Vincent said, reviewing financial papers.

""It’s not just talk, Don Vincent,"" Marcus warned nervously. ""They are tracking the estate’s security detail. They know the girl and her mother are here.""
