CHAPTER 1: THE BLOOD ON THE MARBLE

The quiet elegance of *L’Hermitage* was shattered the second the brass-framed doors burst open.

Don Vincent Corneille didn’t flinch. A man who had spent forty years navigating the treacherous underworld of Chicago did not startle at loud noises. But as his gold Rolex caught the warm light of the sconces, his eyes settled on the intruder: a small girl, no older than eight, her white dress torn and stained with dark, fresh crimson.

She ran past the towering bodyguards, her bare feet slapping against the polished marble floor. Her eyes were wide, frantic, carrying a terror far too heavy for a child.

""Please!"" she sobbed, clutching the lapel of Vincent’s custom dark-navy suit. ""They’re hurting my mama!""

Vincent lowered his crystal glass of vintage champagne. His hand, weathered by age and power, remained steady, but his gaze sharpened. ""What's your name, child?""

""Sophie..."" Her voice trembled, a tear cutting a clean path through the dried blood and dirt on her cheek. ""They're beating her because she had no money.""

For a brief, fraction of a second, the cold mask of the Mob Boss cracked. In the curve of Sophie’s tear-stained eyes, Vincent saw a ghost—his own daughter, lost to the violence of his past thirty years ago.

He placed his glass on the white tablecloth with a soft *clink*. His chair scraped against the floor as he stood, his commanding presence immediately hushing the entire room. His chief lieutenant, Marcus, stepped forward, hand already reaching beneath his tailored jacket.

""Who did this?"" Vincent asked, his voice a low, rumbling thunder. ""Get the car. Nobody moves until I say.""

Sophie looked up, her small hands tightly gripping his jacket like a lifeline. ""Are you going to save her?""

May you like

Vincent leaned down, his eyes locking onto hers with absolute, deadly certainty. ""Not if I can help it. And I can help it.""
