CHAPTER 14: THE FINAL LESSON

Ten years later.

Vincent’s health began to decline. The doctors noted his heart was failing, worn down by a long and turbulent life. He was moved to the medical wing of the facility.

He did not fear death; he welcomed it with the quiet peace of a man who had squared his accounts with God and humanity.

One rainy afternoon, Agent Miller walked into the medical room. He carried a small portable audio recorder and a sealed envelope.

""Vincent,"" Miller said softly. ""I brought you something.""

Miller hit play on the recorder. A young woman’s voice filled the quiet room—clear, confident, and filled with deep affection.

""Hello, Vincent,"" Sophie's voice echoed. ""I'm eighteen today. I'm starting my first year at university to study law. I want to help people who cannot defend themselves—just like you helped my mother and me. I know why you couldn't be here, but I want you to know that every good thing I do in my life will be because of the second chance you gave us. You are my hero.""

Tears trickled down Vincent’s weathered cheeks. He closed his eyes, listening to the voice of the girl who had changed his destiny.
