CHAPTER 11: A PRICE WILLINGLY PAID

Vincent had made a deal with the United States District Attorney. In exchange for providing irrefutable evidence that dismantled the largest organized crime ring in the Midwest, Vincent agreed to plead guilty to his own past offenses.
He sat in a interrogation room with the Lead Prosecutor, Special Agent Miller.
""You could have fought this, Vincent,"" Miller admitted, leafing through the thick stack of signed confessions. ""You had the best lawyers in the country. Why give it all up now?""
""Because an old man who spends his life running from his sins only leaves a legacy of ash,"" Vincent replied quietly. ""I spent forty years taking things from this world. It’s time I gave something back.""
""What about the mother and the girl?"" Miller asked.
""Part of my deal,"" Vincent said, his voice resolute. ""Full Federal Witness Protection for Elena and Sophie. New identities, a new home, and a secure trust fund funded by my legitimately liquidated assets. They must be untouchable.""
