Chapter 8: The Confrontation at the Cafe

Three weeks after the incident on the grand staircase, the autumn air had turned crisp and biting. Elena sat at an outdoor table of a quiet downtown bistro, wearing a loose cashmere sweater that comfortably concealed her changing shape. She was reviewing architectural blueprints for the nursery she was designing in her childhood home when a shadow fell across her table.
It was Marcus. He looked unrecognizable. His hair was unkempt, his designer suit rumpled and unpressed, and the arrogant confidence that had once defined his every movement was entirely gone. He looked older, gaunt, and desperate.
"Elena," Marcus said, his voice trembling as he pulled out the chair opposite her without waiting for an invitation. "Thank God I found you. They froze all my personal accounts. My credit cards are declined. The firm locked me out of my office permanently this morning."
Elena did not look up from her blueprints immediately. She slowly traced her finger along the edge of the paper, taking a quiet sip of her herbal tea before raising her eyes to meet his. "You're trespassing, Marcus. The temporary restraining order prohibits you from coming within five hundred feet of me or my residence."
"Elena, please, drop the restraining order," Marcus pleaded, leaning across the table, his hands shaking slightly. "Julianne lied to the police. She’s trying to pin the whole conspiracy on me to save herself. You know me. We built a life together. You know I would never intentionally harm you or our baby."
"Marcus," Elena interrupted, her voice entirely devoid of emotion, sounding as calm as glass. "I listened to the audio recording every single day for the past three weeks just to remind myself of what you sounded like when you thought I was lying broken at the bottom of those stairs. Not once did you ask if I was okay. Your first instinct was to protect your assets, and your second instinct was to cover your tracks."
"I panicked!" Marcus hissed, desperate to keep his voice down as nearby patrons glanced nervously at their table. "Any man in my position would have panicked!"
"No, Marcus," Elena replied, sliding her blueprints back into their leather folder. "Any decent man would have rushed down those stairs, thrown himself over his wife and unborn child, and cursed the person who pushed her. You didn't do that. You calculated the risk to your career before you even reached the bottom step."
A uniformed police officer, stationed discreetly across the street as part of Elena’s personal security detail, began walking toward their table, noticing the violation of the restraining order.

Marcus saw the officer approaching and scrambled to his feet, panic flashing in his eyes. "Elena, you can't do this to me! I'll lose everything!"
"You already lost everything, Marcus," Elena said softly, watching as the officer placed a firm hand on Marcus’s shoulder. "The only thing left is the sentence."
