Chapter 13: The Verdict

The jury deliberated for less than four hours before sending a note to the judge indicating they had reached a unanimous verdict on all counts. The courtroom filled to capacity within minutes as spectators, reporters, and legal observers crowded into the gallery, eager to hear the final resolution of the high-profile trial.
Elena sat quietly beside her father, her hand resting gently on her belly as she felt a reassuring kick from within. She wore a simple, elegant navy blue dress, symbolizing a clean break from the past and a confident step into the future.
Marcus sat at the defense table, staring fixedly at the polished wood surface before him, his hands clasped tightly together, his knuckles white with tension.
Judge Vance entered the chamber, her expression grave and composed. "Have you reached a unanimous verdict?" the judge asked the jury foreman.
"We have, Your Honor," the foreman replied, standing up and handing the completed verdict forms to the bailiff.
Judge Vance reviewed the documents carefully before passing them to the court clerk to read aloud. The clerk adjusted her microphone and cleared her throat.
"In the case of the State of the District versus Marcus Sterling: On the count of conspiracy to commit physical assault, the jury finds the defendant guilty. On the count of financial fraud and embezzlement of corporate assets, the jury finds the defendant guilty. On the count of subordination of perjury, the jury finds the defendant guilty."
A sharp intake of breath echoed through the gallery. Marcus closed his eyes, his shoulders slumping forward as the weight of three felony convictions settled over him like lead.
"In the case of the State of the District versus Julianne Vance," the clerk continued, "on the count of aggravated assault of a pregnant person, the jury finds the defendant guilty."

Judge Vance addressed the defendants directly before setting the sentencing hearing date for the following month. "Mr. Sterling, Ms. Vance, the actions you undertook were not merely crimes against individuals; they were violations of the fundamental trust that holds our civil society together. Sentencing will take place in thirty days. Until then, both defendants are remanded to the custody of the county department of corrections without bond."
As the bailiffs moved in to place Marcus in handcuffs, he briefly turned his head toward the gallery, locking eyes with Elena for one final, agonizing second. There was no anger left in Elena’s gaze—only a quiet, resolute peace. She turned away, linking her arm through her father's, and walked out of the courtroom doors into the warm autumn sunlight.
