Chapter 3: The Weight of the Evidence

The tension in the grand foyer became almost palpable as the distant sound of approaching sirens began to filter through the heavy double doors. Someone from the catering staff or one of the lingering guests outside had already called for help, recognizing that the situation inside the mansion had spiraled far beyond a domestic dispute. Elena remained seated on the carpeted steps, her posture rigid, refusing to let Marcus play the concerned husband for an audience that was rapidly closing in.
Marcus stood up slowly, brushing off the knees of his black trousers, his eyes fixed on the glowing device in Elena’s hand. He realized with terrifying clarity that the recording was likely already syncing to a cloud storage account accessible by Elena’s legal team. Any attempt to snatch the phone away would be captured on camera, witnessed not just by Julianne, but by the security systems monitoring every square inch of the estate.
"Elena, we can handle this like adults," Marcus said, his tone shifting into the smooth, persuasive cadence he usually reserved for high-stakes corporate negotiations. "There is no need to involve the police or make a public spectacle. Whatever you think you know about the accounts, we can sit down tomorrow morning with our attorneys and work out a fair division. You’ll be taken care of. You and the baby."
Julianne stepped closer, her heels clicking sharply against the marble floor as she reached the bottom of the stairs. Her face was flushed with a mixture of anger and panic. "He's right, Elena. You're holding a grudge because your marriage fell apart. Accidents happen. People trip. If you go public with this manipulated audio, you'll destroy Marcus's career, and for what? Spite?"
Elena looked up at the two of them, a chillingly calm smile touching the corners of her lips. The contrast between her elegant beige evening dress, the subtle signs of physical distress, and her terrifying mental composure made her look less like a victim and more like an executioner. "Spite? Julianne, you tried to cause a miscarriage because you were tired of waiting for Marcus to divorce me properly. And Marcus, you stood by and let her orchestrate this entire weekend under my own roof."
"That is a complete fabrication," Julianne hissed, stepping forward as if to grab the phone.

Marcus intercepted her, throwing out an arm to block Julianne’s path. "Stay back, Julianne. Just stop talking." He turned back to his wife, his eyes pleading. "Elena, please. Turn off the recording. Let's go to the hospital. Let's make sure the baby is healthy. That has to be our first priority."
Elena finally allowed Marcus to help her stand, though she leaned away from him the moment her feet touched the floor. She slipped the smartphone safely into the small concealed pocket of her dress, keeping her hand resting over it like a shield. "The ambulance is here," Elena said quietly, nodding toward the flashing red and blue lights reflecting through the stained-glass transom above the front door. "And the only place I'm going is straight to the emergency room, accompanied by a police escort. You two should decide who is going to pack your bags first."
