Chapter 4: Shadows at the Hospital

The sterile white lights of the county hospital emergency room felt blinding after the dim, luxurious ambiance of the grand foyer. Elena lay on a gurney in Trauma Bay Three, the rhythmic beep of a fetal heart monitor filling the small room with a reassuring, steady cadence. Dr. Sarah Vance, an obstetrician with sharp eyes and a no-nonsense demeanor, adjusted the ultrasound wand across Elena’s lower abdomen while reviewing the digital charts on her tablet.
"Everything looks remarkably stable considering the trauma," Dr. Vance said, her eyes fixed on the screen. "There's some minor bruising along your left hip and lower back, and elevated cortisol levels indicative of acute stress. But the baby’s heartbeat is strong and steady. You both got very lucky tonight."
Elena exhaled a long, shaky breath she felt like she had been holding for hours. "Thank you, Doctor."
"I've noted the cause of trauma in your intake report as a fall resulting from physical altercation," Dr. Vance added, pausing to look directly into Elena’s eyes. "Hospital protocol requires us to notify local authorities when domestic assault is suspected, especially given the circumstances of your arrival. A detective is waiting outside."
"Send him in," Elena said without hesitation.
A moment later, Detective Thomas Miller stepped into the cubicle. He was a tall, weathered man in a rumpled gray suit with kind eyes that missed very little. He pulled up a plastic chair beside Elena’s gurney and opened a small leather notepad. "Mrs. Sterling. The hospital staff briefed me on the initial report. Your husband and another woman are currently downstairs in the waiting area. I'd like to hear what happened in your own words."
Elena nodded, pulling the smartphone from her purse and placing it gently on the tray table between them. "I have more than my words, Detective. I have the entire sequence of events recorded in high-definition audio, backed up by cloud storage."
She tapped the screen, playing the audio file from the moment Julianne approached her on the landing to the unmistakable sound of the shove, followed immediately by Julianne’s panicked denial and Marcus’s desperate intervention. Detective Miller listened with intense concentration, his expression darkening with every passing second. When the audio finished, he looked back down at Elena with a mixture of professional respect and deep sympathy.

"This is not just a domestic dispute, Mrs. Sterling," Detective Miller said quietly, clicking his pen. "Depending on the medical fallout and the premeditation involved, this crosses the line into felony reckless endangerment, assault of a pregnant person, and potentially conspiracy. Do you wish to press full charges against both individuals?"
Elena stared out the small wired-glass window of the trauma bay, watching the distant glow of the city skyline. The grief of losing her marriage had completely burned away, leaving behind a cold, indestructible resolve. "Against both of them," Elena confirmed, her voice unwavering. "I want every single charge the district attorney can bring."
