Chapter 12: The Turning Point

On the third day of the trial, the prosecution called its star witness to the stand: Julianne Vance. Dressed in a standard county-issued orange jumpsuit, Julianne walked into the courtroom with her eyes cast downward, refusing to meet the gaze of the journalists, the spectators, or Marcus himself.
The prosecutor led Julianne through a meticulous timeline of her relationship with Marcus, establishing how the affair had evolved from a professional liaison into a coordinated plot to force Elena out of the picture before the corporate merger and asset reallocation went into effect.
"Did Mr. Sterling ever explicitly ask you to cause physical harm to his wife?" Hayes asked, standing directly in front of the witness box.
Julianne swallowed hard, her voice trembling slightly as the microphones amplified her response across the silent room. "Yes. He told me that Elena was being unreasonable about the divorce terms and that if she suffered a miscarriage, the legal complications surrounding the estate division would disappear."
From the defense table, Marcus leaped to his feet, shouting across the courtroom. "That is a lie! She's making the whole thing up to save herself!"
"Order! Order in the court!" Judge Vance banged her gavel sharply, her expression stern as two bailiffs immediately stepped forward to restrain Marcus, forcing him back down into his chair. "One more outburst from the defense table, Mr. Sterling, and I will hold you in direct contempt of court."
Elena watched the scene unfold from the gallery without a single flicker of emotion on her face. The man shouting desperately in the center of the courtroom bore no resemblance to the charismatic, powerful executive she had married years ago. He was simply a man trapped by the consequences of his own moral decay.

During the cross-examination, Marcus’s public defender attempted to impeach Julianne’s credibility, pointing out her plea bargain and accusing her of shifting the blame to secure a lighter prison sentence. But Julianne remained steadfast, producing dozens of printed email threads and encrypted chat logs that corroborated every major claim she made.
When the prosecution rested its case late that afternoon, the jury box wore an expression of collective condemnation. The evidence was overwhelming, and the defense had failed to provide a single credible alternative narrative to explain the digital trail of guilt.
