Chapter 6: Rebuilding the Foundation

The sun streamed through the wide bay windows of Elena’s childhood home, a sprawling craftsman-style house overlooking the quiet, tree-lined streets of the historic district. After discharging from the hospital, Elena had refused to return to the matrimonial mansion where the attack took place, opting instead for the safety and familiarity of the home where she had grown up. Boxes were stacked neatly against one wall of the sunroom, containing the few personal items she had recovered under police escort.

Dr. Sarah Vance—who turned out to be a distant cousin of Robert’s through marriage—had stopped by for a routine home checkup, ensuring that the residual stress from the fall had not caused any long-term complications for the pregnancy. Now entering her second trimester, Elena looked healthier, her color returning as the constant ambient anxiety of her toxic marriage dissipated.

"Your blood pressure is normal, and the baby’s vitals are textbook," Dr. Vance said, packing away her stethoscope into a canvas medical bag. "Whatever mental shift you made after leaving that house, it’s working wonders for your physical health. Stress is the silent killer, Elena, especially in situations like yours."

"I spent years trying to keep the peace, Sarah," Elena said softly, staring out at the blooming hydrangeas in the front garden. "I thought if I compromised enough, if I looked away from the late nights and the coldness, Marcus would eventually remember the man he used to be before the ambition consumed him. I didn't realize that staying in a burning house doesn't save it; it just ensures you burn along with it."

A gentle knock at the door interrupted them. Robert walked into the sunroom carrying a tray of fresh lemonade and a thick stack of legal documents. He kissed the top of Elena’s head before setting the tray down on the coffee table. "Detective Miller just called," Robert announced, pulling up an armchair. "Julianne has been formally charged with aggravated assault of a pregnant person and tampering with evidence. Her lawyer is trying to cut a plea deal by turning over every single email and text message Marcus sent her regarding the corporate asset transfers."

Elena took a glass of lemonade, her expression calm and composed. "And Marcus?"

"Marcus is completely isolated," Robert replied, pouring a glass for himself. "His legal team tried to file an emergency injunction to halt the asset freeze, but the judge threw it out within five minutes. Without his corporate backing, his high-priced defense attorneys are already threatening to drop him unless he pays a massive retainer upfront. He tried to call me three times this morning. I sent every call straight to voicemail."

"I don't want to ruin him financially just for spite, Dad," Elena said thoughtfully. "I just want what is rightfully mine, and what belongs to this child. Everything else can burn down for all I care."

"It's not spite, sweetheart," Robert said gently. "It's justice. And in the real world, accountability is the only currency that matters."
