Chapter 9: The Gathering Storm

The great cathedral of Saint Aurelius towered over the capital, its soaring Gothic arches piercing the leaden winter sky like frozen prayers. Inside, the massive stone sanctuary was packed to capacity. Lords in ermine-trimmed cloaks, high-ranking clergy in crimson vestments, and wealthy merchants filled the carved oak pews, their murmurs echoing off the vaulted ceilings like the low rumble of an oncoming thunderstorm.
At the center of the nave stood a raised dais covered in black velvet. Upon it sat three high inquisitors of the church, their faces hidden beneath deep hoods, flanked by armed temple guards holding heavy halberds.
The heavy iron doors at the front of the cathedral slowly groaned open. A path cleared instantly through the tense crowd as Queen Aurelia walked forward. She wore a heavy cloak of ermine and velvet, her diamond crown catching the pale light filtering through the stained-glass windows depicting ancient saints and martyrs.
With her right hand, she held firmly onto Julian. The eight-year-old boy looked remarkably composed, though his pale face and scratched cheeks bore the physical scars of his harrowing journey. He wore a simple white tunic, holding the silver crest emblem safely inside his pocket.
As they mounted the steps of the dais, High Chancellor Vane stepped out from the shadows of a stone pillar, a self-satisfied smirk playing faintly at the corners of his mouth.
"Welcome to the Tribunal of Truth, Your Majesty," Vane announced loudly enough for the entire assembly to hear. "May the holy light expose all deceptions."
"Begin your theater, Vane," Aurelia whispered coldly as she stepped up to the wooden witness rail, keeping Julian protectively beside her.
The Chief Inquisitor, a tall, gaunt man with a raspy voice, rose from his carved wooden chair. He unfurled a long scroll of parchment and began reading the formal charges of impersonation, treason, and conspiracy against the crown. The accusations were heavy, calculated to turn public sentiment entirely against the young boy before he even had a chance to speak.
When the reading concluded, the Inquisitor looked down through his dark hood. "Boy, state your name and present your evidence to the court."
Julian swallowed hard, his throat dry. He looked out at the sea of cold, judgmental faces staring back at him. He felt small, fragile, and utterly alone in the vast, intimidating cathedral.
Aurelia gave his hand a reassuring squeeze. Julian took a deep breath, stepped forward to the edge of the dais, and reached into his pocket. He pulled out the shiny silver royal crest emblem, holding it up so the morning sun caught its polished surface, sending a bright beam of light dancing across the stone floor.
"My name is Julian," the boy’s soft, clear voice echoed through the silent sanctuary. "And my mother told me to live with the Queen because I am her son."
A low murmur rippled through the pews. Several lords scoffed openly, shaking their heads in theatrical disbelief.
"A shiny piece of metal found in the dirt," Vane declared, stepping forward to address the inquisitors. "A trinket any thief could steal from a dead courier. This proves nothing. We demand the physical examination of the arm to verify the alleged birthmark."
The Chief Inquisitor nodded slowly. "Step forward, child. Roll up your sleeve."
Aurelia stepped in front of Julian defensively. "You will not touch him!"
May you like
"If you refuse, Queen Aurelia," the Inquisitor stated flatly, "the tribunal will instantly rule against you, and the boy will be remanded to the crown dungeons as a treasonous spy."
