Chapter 6: Tears in the Archive

The heavy oak doors of the royal archives were locked from the inside, sealing out the political chaos of the outer palace. Rows upon rows of towering mahogany bookshelves stretched upward into the dim shadows, holding centuries of royal decrees, birth records, and genealogical charts bound in aged leather.

Aurelia sat at a heavy oak reading desk, the flickering light of a single oil lamp casting long, dancing shadows across her face. Julian sat beside her on a cushioned wooden bench, staring blankly at his small hands resting in his lap. The news of Martha’s death had shattered the last remaining thread of his childhood innocence; the woman who had loved and protected him through years of bitter cold and hunger was truly gone.

"Julian," Aurelia murmured gently, breaking the heavy silence that hung between them. She reached out and placed her hand over his. "Look at me."

The boy slowly raised his head, his big hazel eyes swimming with unshed tears.

"I know the world feels terrifying right now," Aurelia continued, her voice soft yet laced with fierce determination. "They want us to doubt ourselves. They want the court to believe you are an imposter so they can maintain their grip on power. But we are going to prove them wrong. Right here, in the history of our bloodline."

Aurelia pulled forward a massive, leather-bound tome embossed with the golden seal of the first dynasty—the Royal Birth Registry of the Third Era. The pages were yellowed with age, smelling faintly of dried lavender and old parchment.

"Ten years ago, every royal infant born within these walls was marked by the royal physician," Aurelia explained, carefully turning the fragile pages until she reached the darkened entries of the winter of the fire. "Not just with a silver crest, but with a unique seal burned into the skin using a specialized herbal tincture. A mark that never fades, changing color under direct moonlight."

Julian blinked, looking down at his own left wrist, which had always borne a faint, crescent-shaped birthmark that looked somewhat like a fading bruise. "Like this?" he asked softly, extending his arm toward the lamplight.

Aurelia gasped softly, her breath catching in her throat. She gently took his small wrist, turning it closer to the flickering flame. Under the golden light, the faint mark shimmered with a subtle, luminescent silver tint—a biological signature that could never be forged by any criminal or copied by any counterfeiter.

"Yes," Aurelia whispered, tears welling in her eyes as a profound wave of relief washed over her soul. "By the ancestors, yes. It is the Mark of the Sun."

Suddenly, a sharp, metallic sound echoed from the heavy archives door—the distinct click of a skeleton key turning in the ancient brass lock.

Aurelia instantly pulled Julian behind her chair, her hand instinctively resting on the hilt of a ceremonial dagger mounted on the desk.

"Who is there?" she demanded, her voice echoing sharply through the cavernous room as the heavy door began to slowly push inward.
