Chapter 8: Echoes of Betrayal

The morning sun broke over the snow-capped peaks of the northern mountains, casting long, frigid shadows across the royal gardens. Inside the grand dining hall, a lavish breakfast feast was laid out upon a long mahogany table, yet the atmosphere was as cold as the winter wind howling outside the stained-glass windows.

High Chancellor Vane sat at the head of the table in Aurelia’s absence, leisurely sipping spiced black tea from a silver goblet. Surrounding him were three of the realm's most influential lords: Lord Radcliffe, Duke Sterling, and Baron Vance. They spoke in hushed, conspiratorial tones, their eyes glancing frequently toward the heavy oak doors.

The doors finally opened, and Queen Aurelia entered, walking with an air of absolute majesty. Julian walked quietly by her side, dressed in a newly tailored velvet tunic bearing the royal crest of the sun and lion, his chin held high despite the overwhelming sea of hostile eyes directed at him.

Aurelia did not take her usual seat at the head of the table; instead, she walked directly to the center of the dais, looking down at the gathered council members with unconcealed disdain.

"You look troubled, Chancellor," Aurelia remarked, her voice cutting cleanly through the clinking of silverware. "Has the morning coffee turned bitter?"

Vane set his goblet down with a soft, deliberate clink. He stood up slowly, smoothing the front of his velvet robes. "Not at all, Your Majesty. But we are troubled by your absence at the dawn briefing. The realm is in turmoil. Word of the boy has leaked to the merchant guilds, and market prices are plummeting out of fear of civil unrest."

"Let them fear truth for once," Aurelia replied coldly. "Julian is my son. The genetic records in the royal archive have verified his lineage beyond any shadow of a doubt. The Mark of the Sun is upon his wrist."

Lord Radcliffe slammed his heavy fist onto the mahogany table, rattling the crystal decanters. "Birthmarks and old books can be manipulated by a desperate queen looking to fill the void of a lost child! We demand a formal tribunal. A public trial before the High Council and the church elders to authenticate this boy's identity once and for all."

"A public trial?" Aurelia’s eyes flashed with fury. "You wish to put an eight-year-old child on trial like a common criminal before a kangaroo court rigged by the Chancellor?"

"It is constitutional law, Your Majesty," Vane countered smoothly, stepping forward with a sickeningly polite smile. "If he is truly the royal heir, he will survive the scrutiny of the church and the lords. If he is an imposter, the law will deal with him accordingly. Refusal to submit to the tribunal will be seen as an admission of treason against the crown."

Julian looked up at his mother, his big hazel eyes wide with a quiet, terrified understanding. He squeezed her hand tightly, his small fingers trembling.

Aurelia looked down at her son, feeling the crushing weight of the crown pressing down upon her shoulders. She knew the tribunal was a trap—a staged political execution designed to strip her of her throne and eliminate her bloodline once and for all. Yet, refusing meant immediate deposition by military force.

"We accept your tribunal," Aurelia declared, her voice ringing clear and defiant across the hall. "But if he is proven to be my son, every lord in this room will kneel before him—starting with you, Chancellor."
