Chapter 11: Shattered Alibis

The revelation inside the cathedral sent shockwaves through the aristocracy that could not be silenced by political spin or diplomatic maneuvering. High Chancellor Vane watched in stunned disbelief as members of the High Council, terrified of defying undeniable divine and biological proof, began shifting their weight and whispering amongst themselves in mounting panic.

Realizing that the legal battle was slipping through his fingers, Vane made a desperate, silent hand gesture to Captain Morvath, who stood near the heavy side doors of the sanctuary. Morvath immediately nodded, signaling a squad of armored temple guards to draw their swords and advance toward the dais.

"This is sorcery!" Vane shouted over the murmurs of the crowd, pointing a trembling finger at Julian. "A cheap parlor trick utilizing luminescent chemicals! Do not let a glowing illusion blind you to the threat of treason! Arrest them both!"

Before the guards could charge the steps, a sudden, thunderous crash echoed through the cathedral. The massive front oak doors were violently thrown open, revealing a battalion of royal cavalrymen in silver-and-blue armor, led by General Gareth—Aurelia’s fiercely loyal military commander who had been secretly dispatched to investigate the burned northern cabin three days prior.

General Gareth strode down the center aisle, his heavy steel boots clanking rhythmically against the stone floor. He held a thick leather satchel in one hand and a parchment sealed with the black wax of the northern magistracy in the other.

"Stand down, guards of the Chancellor!" Gareth bellowed, his voice commanding instant obedience from the hesitant soldiers. He marched straight up the steps of the dais, ignoring Vane entirely, and dropped to one knee before Queen Aurelia and young Julian.

"Your Majesty," Gareth spoke loudly enough for every corner of the cathedral to hear. "Forgive my delay. My men and I thoroughly investigated the ruins of the northern cabin where the young prince was raised."

Aurelia kept her hand protectively on Julian’s shoulder, her eyes fixed on the general. "What did you find, Gareth?"

"We found the remains of the brave woman who protected him," Gareth said grimly, opening the leather satchel and pulling out a charred, scorched metal signet ring bearing the private crest of the royal guard. "And we found this. It belonged to the captain of the guard who led the arson attack ten years ago—the very same night the royal nursery was burned."

Gareth slowly stood up and turned his piercing gaze directly toward High Chancellor Vane. "The trail of forged documents, missing birth records, and assassination attempts all leads to one man who stood to gain absolute power if the royal bloodline was extinguished."

Vane’s face turned pale as ash, his breath coming in shallow, ragged gasps. "Lies! Absurd fabrications by a disgruntled military faction!"

"Is it a lie, Vane?" Aurelia stepped forward, her voice dripping with lethal elegance. She pulled out the silver crest Julian had carried and held it beside the scorched signet ring. "The counter-stamps match. You ordered the abduction of my newborn son a decade ago, hoping to usurp the throne from the shadows."

The cathedral erupted into chaos. Lords and merchants scattered backward in sheer terror, realizing they had aligned themselves with a traitor. Vane backed away toward the side exit, his hand slipping toward the dagger at his belt, only to find himself instantly surrounded by General Gareth’s drawn swords.

"It's over, Vane," Aurelia commanded coldly. "Arrest the Chancellor for high treason and attempted regicide."
