Chapter 4: Warmth in the Cold Citadel

Inside the opulent royal chambers, the biting chill of the winter night felt miles away. A crackling fire danced in the massive hearth, casting a golden glow over the velvet furnishings and gilded walls. Julian sat huddled on the edge of a velvet armchair that swallowed his small frame, clutching a steaming porcelain cup of honeyed milk between both hands.

Queen Aurelia sat on a low stool directly in front of him, her elaborate blonde updo slightly undone, her diamond crown resting carelessly on a nearby side table. The ornate white gown, usually reserved for grand state functions, felt heavy and restrictive, but she refused to change. She needed to be the Queen he remembered, even if he had never known her before tonight.

"Drink slowly, Julian," Aurelia said softly, her voice devoid of its usual royal sternness, replaced instead by a fragile, tentative warmth. "You are safe here. No one will ever hurt you again."

Julian took a hesitant sip, his big, tearful hazel eyes blinking up at her through a veil of long lashes. The dirt smudges on his pale cheeks had been partially washed away by a damp cloth, revealing a smattering of faint freckles across his nose and a small, faded scar along his jawline—a physical map of a harsh life spent surviving on the brutal streets of the lower districts.

"My mom... she told me to find you," Julian whispered, his voice trembling as fresh tears threatened to spill over his lower lid. "She said you were the only one in the world who could keep me safe from the bad men in the black cloaks."

Aurelia’s breath hitched in her throat. "What bad men, Julian? Tell me everything. Who raised you?"

The boy stared down into the milky liquid, his small fingers tracing the rim of the cup. "Her name was Martha. She found me when I was a baby, she said. We lived in a small cabin in the woods far away from here. But three days ago... men with dark horses and swords came to our door. They asked for the silver crest. Martha hid me under the floorboards before they... before they burned the house down."

A cold shudder ran down Aurelia’s spine. The memory of that dreadful night a decade ago flooded back with agonizing clarity. The nursery fire, the suffocating smoke, the stolen cradle. It wasn't an accident. It had been an abduction, orchestrated by someone within her own inner circle who wanted her bloodline wiped out.

"She told me to run straight to the big white gates of the capital," Julian continued, looking up with a heartbreaking mixture of innocence and profound grief. "She said if I showed you the silver crest, you would know I am your son."

Aurelia reached out, her gentle hand cupping his dirt-smudged cheek. Her thumb softly brushed away a stray tear. "She was right, my sweet boy. You are home now."
