Chapter 10: The Mark of Truth

The silence inside the grand cathedral of Saint Aurelius was so absolute that the distant sound of falling snow hitting the stained-glass windows could be distinctly heard. Every eye in the vast sanctuary was locked upon the raised velvet dais where Queen Aurelia stood shield-like in front of young Julian.
Julian looked up at his mother, seeing the fierce, unyielding resolve in her eyes. He gently placed his small hand on her arm, signaling that he was ready. He took a brave step forward, breaking past the protective barrier of her heavy velvet cloak, and stood alone before the three hooded inquisitors.
"I am not afraid," Julian said quietly, his voice carrying surprising strength across the stone room.
With trembling fingers, the eight-year-old boy reached up and slowly rolled back the left sleeve of his white tunic. He extended his pale, thin arm toward the inquisitors, exposing the skin of his inner forearm to the harsh light of the cathedral lamps.
All eyes strained forward. There, nestled against his pale skin, was a faint, crescent-shaped birthmark. At first glance under the artificial lamp light, it looked like a harmless, faded blemish or an old bruise from a childhood fall.
A collective chuckle of skepticism rippled through the noble pews. High Chancellor Vane smiled triumphantly, stepping toward the dais with his arms folded across his chest.
"Behold," Vane announced to the assembly with theatrical disappointment. "A common birthmark found on thousands of peasant children across the realm. An ordinary blemish dressed up as a royal miracle to manipulate a grieving queen."
Lord Radcliffe nodded eagerly from the front row. "Case closed! The imposter has been exposed. Arrest the boy and secure her Majesty for psychological evaluation!"
Panic threatened to overwhelm Aurelia, but before the temple guards could surge forward, she remembered the ancient secret recorded in the archives.
"Wait!" Aurelia commanded, her voice ringing with absolute authority that temporarily froze the guards in their tracks. She stepped closer to Julian and pulled a small, silver-framed magnifying glass and a vial of sacred moon-oil from her ceremonial pouch.
"The Mark of Light does not reveal its true nature under common torchlight or lantern flame," Aurelia declared, stepping between the inquisitors and her son. "It is bound to the silver alloy of our bloodline and the pale rays of true moonlight."
With swift, precise movements, Aurelia unlatched the heavy iron shutters covering the high clerestory window directly above the dais. A thick shaft of pale, silvery winter sunlight broke through the heavy clouds outside, piercing the gloom of the sanctuary and casting a brilliant, luminescent pool of light directly onto Julian’s outstretched arm.
As the pure natural light touched the pale skin, the faint crescent mark suddenly shifted. The dull blemish began to glow softly, transforming into a brilliant, shimmering silver sunburst insignia surrounded by microscopic royal runes—the unmistakable, genetically encoded biological seal of the ruling dynasty that no forger, alchemist, or criminal could ever replicate.
Gasps of absolute shock echoed through the cathedral. Several elderly lords instinctively dropped to their knees upon the cold stone floor.

High Chancellor Vane’s triumphant smile vanished instantly, his face draining of all color as he stared in frozen horror at the glowing arm.
