Chapter 9: The Final Stand

The wind from the jet turbines whipped across the tarmac, tearing at Julian’s hair and coat as he closed the distance between himself and Marcus. The distance narrowed to ten feet, then five. Marcus’s hand twitched inside his coat, hovering near a concealed holster, but the overwhelming presence of Julian bearing down on him broke his resolve.
With a curse of frustration, Marcus abandoned the weapon, pulling a heavily encrypted hard drive from his pocket instead and winding up to hurl it into the spinning turbine blades to destroy the evidence.
Julian lunged forward with explosive speed, tackling Marcus hard to the concrete just as the hard drive flew wide of the engine, clattering harmlessly across the asphalt. The two men hit the ground together, rolling over the grit as the roar of the jet drowned out their scuffle.
Detective Vance sprinted across the tarmac, his badge raised, and quickly secured the area, pulling Marcus off Julian and slamming him against the side of the fuselage. "You're under arrest for conspiracy, grand larceny, and corporate sabotage," Vance declared, snapping the cuffs onto Marcus’s wrists with practiced efficiency.
Julian pushed himself up from the ground, dusting off his trousers and breathing heavily. He looked down at the hard drive lying a few feet away, picking it up carefully. The digital keys to the stolen corporate accounts were intact. The primary evidence needed to dismantle the entire conspiracy was safely in his hands.
As Marcus was led away toward the backup patrol units that had just arrived at the perimeter gate, Maya’s car pulled up near the hangar. She stepped out quickly, her eyes scanning the scene until they locked onto Julian standing safely on the tarmac. She hurried over, her expression a mix of profound relief and lingering anxiety.
"Are you alright?" she asked, her hands hovering near his shoulders as she checked for injuries.

"I'm fine," Julian said, offering a rare, genuine smile as he held up the hard drive. "And so is the company. Marcus didn't get the upload off."
Maya let out a long, shaky breath, leaning into his embrace for a brief, grounding moment. The storm was finally breaking. The individuals who had sought to destroy their lives from the inside out were now facing the unyielding consequence of their actions.
