Chapter 6: The Forensic Audit

Three days after the aborted wedding gala, the mahogany conference room on the top floor of the corporate headquarters resembled a war room. Spread across the long glass table were stacks of financial ledgers, bank statements, and digital storage drives seized from Clara’s private office. Maya sat at the center of the room, her fingers flying across her laptop keyboard as she cross-referenced offshore wire transfers with internal audit logs.

Julian stood nearby, reviewing a summary report prepared by the federal investigators. The scale of Clara’s embezzlement was staggering—millions had been siphoned into shell companies registered in jurisdictions far beyond domestic reach.

"She was methodical," Maya noted, her voice carrying a quiet weariness as she highlighted a series of fraudulent signatures. "She didn't just steal funds; she systematically isolated you from your family advisors, replacing them with individuals loyal only to her."

"And I let it happen because I wanted to believe the expansion was succeeding," Julian said, running a hand through his hair. He pulled out a chair and sat beside her, watching the data scroll down the screen. "Every time I questioned a discrepancy, she had a polished explanation and a fabricated crisis to distract me."

"Guilt is a powerful blindfold, Julian," Maya murmured, glancing up at him. "She played on your desire to prove yourself worthy of your father's legacy."

The door swung open quietly, and Detective Vance stepped into the room, holding a thick manila folder. "Good morning. I have an update from the financial crimes division regarding the secondary accounts we tracked yesterday."

Julian looked up immediately. "Did they trace the final transfer from the wedding night?"

"They did," Vance said, laying several printed photographs onto the table. "The funds were redirected to a private holding account controlled by an alias. But what’s more interesting is who authorized the secondary access key yesterday morning, while Clara was already in custody."

Maya frowned, leaning over the table to inspect the documents. "Someone else had access? Clara had an accomplice?"

"Precisely," Vance confirmed, tapping a finger against the document. "A silent partner who helped construct the corporate facade from the very beginning. And based on our preliminary checks, this individual is still inside the building."
