Chapter 4: The Closing Circle

Detective Vance signaled toward the shadowed archway, and two uniformed officers stepped out into the courtyard, their movements precise and unhurried. The contrast between the festive music still drifting from the ballroom and the grim reality of the arrests was stark.

Clara backed away slowly, her eyes darting toward the perimeter wall as if calculating the odds of an escape, but the officers moved effortlessly to block her path. "This is a setup," she hissed, her voice rising in pitch despite her best efforts to maintain her aristocratic composure. "Julian, tell them! Tell them this is a family matter!"

"There is no family here, Clara," Julian said quietly. He kept one hand resting near Maya’s shoulder, offering a silent anchor as she caught her breath. "There is only the truth, and you spent years burying it."

One of the officers stepped forward, reading Clara her rights with a monotonous professionalism that seemed to strip away her power piece by piece. As the metallic click of handcuffs echoed in the quiet garden, Clara shot one final, venomous look at Julian. It wasn't a look of regret; it was pure, unadulterated hatred. She allowed herself to be led away into the shadows of the corridor, her silver gown whispering against the stone floor like dry leaves.

When the heavy oak doors finally closed behind them, the courtyard fell into an oppressive silence. The distant music had finally stopped, replaced by the murmurs of confused guests beginning to filter out toward the terrace to look for the bride and groom.

Detective Vance turned his attention to Julian and Maya. He clicked off the recorder and slipped it into his coat pocket. "An ambulance is waiting at the service gate for Ms. Vance. You'll both need to come down to the precinct tonight to give your formal statements."

"Understood," Julian replied, wiping a stray drop of water from his forehead. He looked down at Maya, who was shivering beneath his heavy wool jacket. "Can we handle the statements in the morning? She needs medical evaluation."

"We can arrange a mobile unit at your private residence," Vance agreed, nodding respectfully before turning to follow his team.

Left alone in the scattered rose petals and damp stones, Julian and Maya stood in the wreckage of a manipulated life. The wedding was over, the illusion was shattered, and the heavy burden of rebuilding what remained lay squarely before them. Julian reached out, gently taking Maya’s cold hand in his, feeling the faint, steady pulse of survival.
