Chapter 1: The Shattered Night

The cool night air carried the distant, muffled sounds of a string quartet playing a melancholy waltz. Julian stood frozen at the threshold of the terrace, his tuxedo jacket immaculate, his white shirt stiff against a chest that had suddenly stopped breathing. Before him, Clara stood draped in her metallic silver evening gown, her cowl neckline catching the iridescent glow of the underwater pool lights. Just a moment ago, Clara’s stiletto heel had pinned Maya’s frantic fingers against the damp stone coping of the pool. Maya, trapped beneath the surface in her dark long-sleeve swimwear, had finally ceased her desperate thrashing, sinking into the chlorinated depths as the last bubbles drifted toward the surface.

Julian’s voice, sharp and hollow, cut through the humid stillness of the garden. "Say that again."

Clara spun around, her meticulously styled updo shifting slightly as absolute terror drained the color from her painted lips. The silver high-heeled pumps in her left hand nearly slipped from her manicured fingers. The juxtaposition of the romantic wedding reception echoing from the ballroom and the grim reality of the courtyard created a suffocating tension. Julian did not run; he walked forward with measured, heavy steps, his eyes locked onto Clara’s wide, trembling pupils.

"Julian," Clara whispered, her voice cracking beneath the weight of sudden exposure. "You weren't supposed to see this. It’s not what you think. She was going to ruin everything we built."

"Everything?" Julian repeated, his tone devoid of warmth. He stepped past her, ignoring the scattered red rose petals that lay crushed beneath his polished shoes like drops of fresh blood. Without hesitation, Julian stripped off his black suit jacket, threw it onto a wrought-iron patio chair, and dived fully clothed into the illuminated pool.

The shock of the cold water hit him instantly, but adrenaline propelled him downward. He located Maya’s limp form near the deep end, her dark fabric blending with the shadows of the pool liner. Wrapping a strong arm around her waist, he kicked upward, breaking the surface with a sharp gasp for air. He hauled her over to the edge, lifting her upper body onto the stone deck before hoisting himself out beside her.

Clara stood several feet away, her breath coming in ragged gasps. "Julian, listen to me. She knew about the company accounts. She was going to send you to prison."

Julian ignored her completely. He knelt beside Maya, pressing his palms firmly against her chest, initiating CPR with steady, mechanical precision. Every breath he forced into her lungs felt like an indictment of the woman standing a few feet away.
