Chapter 2: The Resuscitation

The silence of the courtyard was broken only by the rhythmic compression of Julian’s hands against Maya’s chest and the faint, rhythmic pulse of bass from the distant celebration inside the manor. Clara remained frozen, her silver gown shimmering like liquid armor under the moonlight, though her posture had lost its rigid menace. She watched Julian work with a mixture of bitter jealousy and mounting panic.

"Come on, Maya. Breathe," Julian muttered under his breath, tilting her chin back to clear her airway. His knuckles were grazed from the rough concrete edge, but he felt no pain, only a fierce, driving necessity to pull her back from the edge.

With a sudden, violent spasm, Maya coughed, expelling a rush of chlorinated water onto the stone pavers. She turned onto her side, her body wracked with shivers as she dragged air into her burning lungs. Her dark long-sleeve swimwear clung tightly to her trembling frame, emphasizing her vulnerability.

Julian pulled her into a protective embrace, supporting her shoulders as she wept quietly, her tears mixing with the water dripping from her hair. "I’ve got you. You’re safe now," he murmured, his voice softening just enough to reassure her, though his eyes remained fixed on Clara across the patio.

Clara took a tentative step forward, her expression hardening once more as the initial wave of shock receded into cold pragmatism. "Julian, be rational," she said, her voice dropping to a harsh whisper. "If she walks away from here, our lives are finished. The scandal will destroy your father's legacy, and everything we sacrificed will be gone."

"Shut up, Clara," Julian said without looking at her. He helped Maya sit upright, wrapping his discarded tuxedo jacket around her shivering shoulders. Maya clutched the fabric tightly, her eyes wide with lingering terror as she looked from Julian to Clara.

"He's not going to protect you, Maya," Clara continued, her tone regaining its sharp edge. "He loves the empire we built together far more than he cares about a stray auditor who dug too deep."

"She isn't just an auditor," Julian said, standing up slowly to face Clara. The height difference between them seemed to vanish as Julian towered over her, his expression an impenetrable mask of granite. "She is my legal wife’s sister. And you tried to murder her."

Maya flinched at the word wife, her grip on the jacket tightening. The tangled web of corporate deceit, forced marriages, and hidden identities was finally unraveling under the harsh glare of the garden lights. Julian looked down at his hands, realizing that the man who walked into this courtyard a few minutes ago was entirely dead.
