Chapter 8: The Airstrip Pursuit

The unmarked police cruiser tore down the empty access road leading to the private aviation terminal, its tires kicking up gravel against the asphalt. In the passenger seat, Julian watched the perimeter fence blur past, his mind racing through every conversation he had shared with Marcus over the past two years. The betrayal ran deeper than money; it was a calculated dismantling of trust.

"We're coming up on the private hangar zone," Detective Vance announced, gripping the steering wheel tightly as he rounded a sharp bend. "Keep your eyes open for a black sedan."

Ahead, a rusted chain-link gate hung open, its padlock sheared clean off. Beyond it sat a sleek, twin-engine charter jet idling on the tarmac, its turbine blades spinning with a low, deafening whine that vibrated through the chassis of the cruiser.

Vance slammed on the brakes, sliding the cruiser to a halt directly across the tarmac entrance to block the jet's taxi path. Julian flung his door open before the vehicle had even fully stopped, stepping out into the fierce downdraft kicked up by the aircraft engines.

From behind the landing gear of the jet, a figure emerged carrying a heavy leather briefcase. It was Marcus, dressed in a sharp trench coat, his glasses glinting under the harsh airfield lights. He froze when he saw the police cruiser, his hand instinctively moving toward his jacket pocket.

"Marcus! Don't do it!" Julian shouted, his voice cutting through the roar of the engines. He advanced across the tarmac with measured, deliberate steps.

Marcus let out a nervous, breathless laugh, his eyes darting frantically toward the open cabin door of the plane. "You're too late, Julian! The transfer codes were encrypted and uploaded to a secure server five minutes ago. Even if you lock me up, the empire is already hollowed out!"

"You're not going anywhere, Marcus," Detective Vance called out, drawing his service weapon and taking cover behind the cruiser door. "Step away from the aircraft and put your hands where we can see them."

Marcus hesitated, his expression shifting from panic to calculating defiance. He took half a step backward toward the boarding ladder, his fingers tightening around the handle of his briefcase. The tension on the tarmac reached a breaking point as the jet engines spooled higher, preparing for takeoff.
