Chapter 6 - The Federal Intercept

Captain Miller’s face flushed a deep, mottled crimson, his hands slamming down hard on the metal desk so forcefully that the coffee mug rattled violently against its saucer.
"You did what?" Miller hissed, spittle flying from his lips as his composure completely shattered. "Are you out of your absolute mind, Ramos? You just declared war on a man who practically funds the entire state pension fund!"
Elena stood her ground, refusing to flinch under his blistering gaze. "I did my job, Captain. The kind of job we all swore an oath to do before Vance started writing the department's budget."
Before Miller could draw another breath to unleash a fresh wave of threats, the master console on the dispatch wall behind him let out a piercing, high-priority alarm. A flashing red banner cut across every monitor in the bullpen, displaying a federal override code that bypassed all local precinct protocols.
FEDERAL MARSHALS OFFICE: ACTIVE WARRANT EXECUTION.
Miller whipped around, staring at the screen in utter disbelief. The coordinates attached to the federal warrant weren't downtown; they were pinpointed directly at the Aegis cliffside facility.
"That's impossible," Miller muttered, running a hand through his thinning gray hair. "The servers were supposed to be scrubbed."
Elena smirked, crossing her arms over her chest. "Turns out, digital footprints are a lot harder to erase when someone actually looks for them, Captain. Looks like the feds didn't wait for my upload. They’ve been tracking Vance’s shell companies for months."
Marcus suddenly burst through the precinct’s front glass doors, soaked to the bone and breathing heavily. He looked panicked, his eyes darting frantically around the bullpen until they locked onto Miller. He pushed past the front counter, ignoring the duty officer.
"Miller! We have a major problem," Marcus yelled across the room, completely ignoring Elena standing nearby. "The van... it was intercepted on the coastal highway by three unmarked black SUVs. They didn't even flash badges. They just ran us off the road!"
Elena’s heart skipped a beat. "Where is the boy, Marcus?"
Marcus turned slowly, finally noticing Elena standing beside the captain. Panic flashed in his eyes, replaced quickly by a mask of cold hostility.

"He's gone," Marcus snarled. "And so is the puppy."
