Chapter 3 - The Badge and the Betrayal

Detective Elena Ramos held her ground, the rain plastering her dark hair against her temples as she stared down the trembling security guard. Marcus swallowed hard, his hand hovering inches from his belt. The heavy diesel engine of the van hummed relentlessly in the background, filling the damp air with toxic exhaust.

"You're making a massive mistake, Detective," Marcus said, forcing a calm facade that failed to mask the sweat beading on his forehead. "I was just doing a community service sweep. Corporate requested we clear the transients off the commercial strip."

Elena took two slow, calculated steps forward, her eyes scanning the small, bruised toddler clinging desperately to the shivering brown puppy. She noted the torn shirt, the peculiar crescent-shaped birthmark peeking out from beneath the dirty collar, and the total lack of standard social services paperwork in Marcus’s hands.

"Corporate sweep? Since when does a security contractor for Vance Enterprises moonlight as a child-removal service in the middle of the night?" Elena retorted, her voice sharp and uncompromising. "Step back, Marcus. That boy isn't going anywhere with you."

Marcus’s eyes darted toward the van’s open door, then back to Elena. A cynical smile touched the corners of his mouth.

"You think you've uncovered a grand conspiracy, don't you? You think you're the hero of this story." Marcus let out a harsh, bitter laugh. "You have no idea whose toes you're stepping on, Ramos. Vance owns this precinct. He owns the judges, the mayor, and half the city council. By sunrise, you'll be directing traffic in the industrial sector."

Before Elena could issue a formal arrest, the passenger door of the idling van swung open with explosive force. A second man emerged from the cab, holding a heavy iron tire iron. Without a word, he lunged forward, swinging the rusted tool in a brutal arc toward the side of Elena’s head.

Elena reacted with professional precision, ducking beneath the wild swing and driving her elbow upward into the attacker’s sternum. The man gasped, stumbling backward against the brick wall and sliding down into the muddy puddle.

Marcus seized the distraction. He lunged forward, scooping up little Leo and the puppy in one frantic, violent motion, and threw them into the back of the van before slamming the metal doors shut with a deafening crash.
