Chapter 13 - The Director’s Ultimatum

The sterile white lights of the county hospital emergency bay hummed softly overhead, contrasting sharply with the chaotic storm raging outside. Director Harrison Reed of the National Intelligence Directorate stepped up to the open rear doors of the ambulance, his sharp, weathered features framed by a dark umbrella held by an armed federal escort.
He didn't look at Detective Elena Ramos; his piercing eyes were fixed entirely on little Leo and the small brown puppy resting quietly in the toddler's lap.
"Good work securing the asset, Detective Ramos," Director Reed said, his voice deep and authoritative, carrying the undeniable weight of the federal government. "You've uncovered a classified state-security initiative that was buried deeper than you could possibly imagine."
Elena stepped down from the ambulance, placing herself protectively between the director and the toddler.
"Asset?" Elena challenged, her voice dripping with sharp defiance. "He's a three-year-old child, Director, not a piece of military hardware. He's not going into a government black site."
Reed offered a cold, humorless smile, stepping closer until he was standing toe-to-toe with the detective.
"You think this is about a rogue pharmaceutical corporation, Detective? Think bigger," Reed replied smoothly. "The Aegis project was funded by a classified defense grant to develop hyper-adaptive human cognitive resistance against neurotoxin warfare. David Vance didn't just build a medical empire; he created the next tier of human evolution. And that little boy isn't just an orphan—he's national security property."
Elena’s hand hovered instinctively near her empty holster. "I don't care about your defense grants or your cold war paranoia. He goes into the standard child welfare system under federal witness protection tonight, or I leak every encrypted file on the Aegis servers to the national press before sunrise."
Reed’s smile vanished instantly, replaced by a dark, dangerous glare. He leaned in close, whispering so only she could hear.
"If you leak those files, Detective, millions of classified documents detailing active deep-cover sleeper cells go public with them. You'll trigger a national security crisis that will collapse the entire intelligence apparatus."
Before Elena could formulate a response, little Leo reached out from the ambulance, his small fingers letting go of the puppy for a split second to gently tug on the hem of Director Reed’s expensive wool trench coat.
Reed froze. He looked down slowly at the toddler, whose big, emotional eyes stared up at him with an eerie, profound depth that seemed to pierce right through the director’s hardened armor.

Suddenly, the puppy let out a sharp, urgent bark, leaping out of the ambulance and landing squarely on the wet pavement, staring intently toward the dark hospital parking garage across the street.
