Chapter 5 - The Secret of Aegis

The precinct was eerily quiet at 2:00 AM, the harsh fluorescent lights buzzing overhead like angry hornets. Detective Elena Ramos sat at her cluttered metal desk, the silver pendant resting beside her cold cup of coffee. The coordinates engraved on the back had led her to an abandoned naval research facility situated on the rocky cliffs just outside city limits—a classified government installation officially decommissioned a decade ago, but quietly acquired by a shell corporation controlled by Arthur Vance six months later.
Elena’s computer screen flickered as she bypassed the final firewall of the municipal property registry. What she found made her blood run cold. Aegis wasn't just a corporate shell; it was an advanced genetic research division dedicated to experimental neuro-regenerative therapy. And right at the top of the human trial subjects list, flagged with a high-priority quarantine status, was a single file: Subject Zero-One.
The birth date matched a toddler born precisely three years ago. The emergency contact listed for the subject was none other than Arthur Vance himself, designated as legal guardian following the suspicious deaths of lead researchers Dr. David and Sarah Vance—Arthur’s own brother and sister-in-law.
"My God," Elena whispered to the empty room, realizing the horrifying truth. Little Leo wasn't just a random homeless child; he was the sole heir to a multi-billion-dollar medical empire, and the living proof of illegal human experimentation conducted within the Aegis facility.
A sharp knock at her desk interrupted her thoughts. Elena snapped her laptop shut, sliding the silver pendant into her trench coat pocket just as Captain Miller stepped out of his glass-walled office. The captain’s face was dark, shadowed by exhaustion and corporate compliance.
"Ramos," Miller called out, his voice dangerously low. "What’s this nonsense about a child abduction on Fourth Avenue? Internal Affairs just called my desk asking why you're running unauthorized queries on decommissioned federal properties."
Elena stood up, squaring her shoulders as she met her superior’s intimidating gaze.
"I have reason to believe a three-year-old boy was kidnapped by Vance's private security tonight, Captain. And I have proof that Vance is running illegal trials at the old Aegis facility."
Miller stepped closer, leaning over her desk with a menacing glare.
"You have nothing, Elena. You're chasing shadows and destroying your career over a phantom tip. Hand over your badge and your service weapon right now, or you'll be facing a disciplinary hearing before the sun comes up."
Elena didn't blink. Instead, she reached slowly into her pocket, her fingers brushing against the cold silver pendant.

"You're too late, Captain," she said softly. "I’ve already uploaded the complete file to the federal prosecutor's secure server."
