Chapter 4 - Screaming Metal and Midnight Escape

The heavy steel doors of the van slammed shut with a metallic echo that rattled the empty alleyway. Elena shook off the sudden adrenaline surge, recovering her stance just as the van’s rear tires spun furiously against the slick asphalt, kicking up a rooster tail of muddy water and gravel.
"Stop right there!" Elena yelled, drawing her service weapon and aiming it directly at the vanishing tail lights.
She squeezed the trigger, firing a single warning shot into the rear quarter-panel. The bullet pierced the metal with a sharp ping, but the driver didn't hesitate. The van surged forward, tearing out of the service alley and fishtailing onto the main boulevard as it vanished into the labyrinth of rain-soaked city streets.
Elena lowered her gun, her breath coming in ragged gasps. She keyed the radio on her shoulder strap, her voice tight with suppressed fury.
"Dispatch, this is Detective Ramos. I have a 10-54 involving a child abduction tied to a Vance Enterprises transport vehicle. License plate... I need an immediate city-wide intercept on a black Ford transit van heading north on Fourth Avenue."
The radio crackled with static for a long, agonizing moment before the dispatcher's voice replied, flat and devoid of emotion.
"Negative, Detective Ramos. All units are currently tied up on a multi-car pileup on the expressway. Stand down and return to precinct headquarters for debriefing."
Elena stared at the small radio in disbelief. "Stand down? A child was just loaded into that van at gunpoint! Run the plates manually, check traffic cameras on Fourth!"
"Orders from Captain Miller, Detective," the dispatcher repeated mechanically. "End of transmission."
Elena dropped her hand, the harsh reality of Marcus’s warning settling heavily over her shoulders. Vance really did own them all. She turned back toward the dark alleyway where the struggle had taken place. The second attacker was already gone, having slipped away into the storm while she was distracted by the fleeing van. Only a single, waterlogged piece of cardboard remained on the pavement, along with a small, muddy footprint left behind by the toddler.
Slowly, Elena walked over to the discarded cardboard. Resting right in the center of the damp paper was a small, silver pendant on a frayed leather cord—something Leo must have dropped during the violent struggle. She picked it up, wiping the rain from the metallic surface with her thumb.

Engraved on the back of the pendant was a set of coordinates and a single word written in flowing script: Aegis.
