Chapter 8 - The Emergency Call

The sharp vibration of Maya’s phone against the lace of her gown cut through the heavy silence of the chapel like a knife. Julian paused halfway down the central aisle, his back still turned, though his shoulders stiffened at the sound. Arthur Vance held his hand out toward the exit, urging Julian to keep moving, but the sheer urgency in the buzzing rhythm made everyone in the room hold their collective breath.

Maya’s trembling fingers fumbled with the folds of her wedding gown until she managed to fish the glowing smartphone out of her pocket. The screen flashed with an unrecognized local number, accompanied by a high-priority emergency alert tag. Her heart hammered against her ribs as she pressed the accept button and brought the device to her ear.

“Hello?” Maya whispered, her voice shaking violently.

“Is this Maya Lin?” a brisk, professional voice responded on the other end, cutting through the ambient noise of a hospital corridor.

“I am calling from St. Jude’s Medical Center. We have your mother, Eleanor Lin, admitted to our emergency ward. She suffered a severe hypertensive episode after receiving a sudden eviction notice served at her residence this afternoon.”

The world around Maya instantly dissolved into absolute nothingness. The towering crystal chandelier, the pristine white floral arch, the staring guests, and even Julian standing ten feet away vanished behind a wall of pure, suffocating terror. Her knees buckled beneath the weight of her heavy dress, and she caught herself sharply against the edge of the wooden altar table, gasping for air.

“Mom?” Maya choked out, the word tearing raw and desperate from her throat.

“Is she—is she okay? I am coming right now.”

“Her blood pressure is dangerously elevated, and she is currently unresponsive,” the nurse replied calmly, maintaining strict professional distance.

“You need to get down here immediately to authorize emergency neurological intervention and settle the disputed insurance guarantees holding up her chart.”

“I’m on my way,” Maya sobbed, her legs shaking so violently she could barely stand upright.

She dropped the phone onto the altar table, the clatter echoing loudly in the silent room. Without caring about the ruined dress, the scattered guests, or the collapsed wedding, Maya ripped the heavy white bouquet from her hands and dropped it onto the floor, scattering white petals across the polished oak boards. She turned toward the side exit, desperate to run, desperate to save the only family she had left.

Julian had turned around just in time to see the devastation break across Maya’s face. He took a hesitant half-step forward, seeing the genuine, unscripted panic replacing the polished facade of the bride he thought he knew.

“Maya, wait,” Julian called out, his voice catching in his throat as she sprinted past him toward the door.
