Chapter 3 - The Legal Trap Unfolds

The process server strode down the center aisle with the practiced indifference of a man delivering bad news daily. Every eye in the chapel shifted from Marcus to the newcomer, the whispered murmurs rising to a nervous crescendo. Julian stood rigidly between Maya and the aisle, his hands curled into tight fists at his sides. Marcus smiled, stepping aside to let the stranger pass, his demeanor shifting from unhinged rage to cold, calculated triumph. Maya’s heart hammered against her ribs like a trapped bird as the process server stopped three paces away from the altar and extended the manila envelope directly toward her.

“Maya Lin?” the process server asked, his voice cutting clearly through the tense atmosphere of the venue.

“You are hereby served with an emergency injunction filed thirty minutes ago. Pending a forensic audit of joint assets and disputed business loans, all personal asset transfers are frozen, including matrimonial ceremonies tied to disputed funds.”

Maya stared at the thick envelope, her fingers refusing to let go of the white bouquet to reach for the paper.

“This is a mistake,” Maya breathed, her voice barely audible over the hum of the air conditioning.

“We settled our separation months ago. There is no pending audit.”

Marcus chuckled darkly, stepping closer to the process server.

“Civil court disagrees, sweetheart. When you blocked my number and tried to ghost out of our partnership, you forgot one tiny detail: unsigned clauses in our original operating agreement give me the right to freeze any major life transitions until my financial stake is fully liquidated or arbitrated.”

Julian turned slowly to face Maya, his dark eyes devoid of the warmth that had made her fall in love with him. The betrayal etched across his features hurt worse than Marcus’s public attack.

“You told me your previous business partnership ended cleanly, Maya,” Julian said, each word deliberate and measured.

“You told me there were no lingering ties, no debts, no legal complications hanging over your head.”

“There weren't supposed to be!” Maya cried out, a tear finally escaping and cutting a warm path down her cheek, ruining her careful makeup.

“Marcus signed a release form six months ago. I swear to you, Julian, I thought this chapter of my life was completely closed.”

“A signed release obtained under emotional duress is legally invalid,” a sharp new voice interjected.

From the front row of seated guests, an older man in a tailored gray suit stood up. It was Arthur Vance, Julian’s senior partner at the law firm, and incidentally, the man who had reviewed their prenuptial agreements. Arthur adjusted his glasses, stepping out into the aisle with a grim frown. He looked at the paperwork in the process server's hand, then up at Maya with professional disappointment.

“If Mr. Vance here is correct,” Arthur said, addressing Julian directly, “then proceeding with this wedding today under these legal conditions could implicate our firm and invalidate your personal assets, Julian. You cannot legally marry under an active asset freeze.”

Maya looked wildly between Arthur, Julian, and Marcus, feeling the ground disintegrate entirely beneath her feet.

“Julian, please,” Maya begged, clutching his arm in desperation.

“We can fight this in court tomorrow. Let’s just finish the ceremony. Let’s get married now.”

Julian gently but firmly peeled Maya’s fingers away from his white tuxedo jacket. He took a slow step backward, looking at the white floral arch above them as if seeing it for the first time as a cage.

“We cannot marry under a cloud of fraud, Maya,” Julian whispered.

Before Maya could protest, Marcus stepped forward and snatched the manila envelope from the process server, tearing it open to reveal a second, even more shocking document.
