Chapter 2 - Echoes of Debt and Deception

The silence that followed Marcus’s declaration was heavier than physical weight. Julian slowly turned his head to look down at Maya, his expression shifting from defensive anger to a chilling, quiet disbelief. The guests in the pews leaned in, whispering behind cupped hands, their eyes darting back and forth like spectators at a tragic theater. Maya felt the pearl hairpins digging uncomfortably into her scalp as she shook her head frantically, desperately trying to find the right words to anchor the sliding reality beneath her feet.
“Julian, do not listen to him,” Maya pleaded, her voice cracking as she took a small step toward her groom, holding out her free hand.
“It is not what it sounds like. Marcus is twisting everything to ruin this day.”
Julian did not take her hand. Instead, his gaze remained fixed on her face, searching her eyes for the absolute truth that he had assumed was already a permanent fixture of their relationship.
“Is his name on your business, Maya?” Julian asked quietly, the lack of volume in his voice making the question terrifyingly loud.
“Did he fund the company you built your entire independent reputation on?”
Before Maya could draw enough breath to answer, Marcus closed the remaining distance, stopping just ten feet from the floral arch. He crossed his arms over his white polo shirt, a bitter smirk playing at the corners of his beard.
“Tell him the truth, Maya,” Marcus goaded, stepping closer until Julian instinctively placed himself directly between Maya and her uninvited ex-partner.
“Tell him about the contract you signed the night before you packed your bags. Tell him you are legally bound to pay me back every single cent before you legally bind yourself to anyone else.”
Maya’s knees felt weak, the lace of her gown heavy against her trembling legs. She looked past Julian’s broad shoulder at Marcus, realizing the terrifying depth of the trap she had walked into.
“I tried to buy you out, Marcus,” Maya said defensively, her voice rising in defensive panic.
“You refused every wire transfer I sent. You wanted control, not your money back.”
“Money is control, Maya,” Marcus shot back coldly, his eyes flashing with an unyielding malice.
“And you cannot marry him until my debt is settled in full. In fact, look at your bouquet. Every single white rose in those hands was paid for by the account we shared. You are literally standing here draped in my investment.”
Julian looked down at the white floral arrangement in Maya’s hands, his expression hardening into stone. Without another word, he turned his back on Marcus and looked directly into Maya’s terrified eyes.
“Is there a legal encumbrance holding our marriage license hostage, Maya?” Julian demanded, his voice dangerously low.
May you like
Maya opened her mouth to reply, but before a single syllable could escape, the heavy wooden doors at the back of the chapel slammed open once more, revealing a stern-faced process server holding a thick manila envelope.
