Chapter 6 - The Unseen Page

The heavy side door of the chapel clicked shut behind Julian and Arthur Vance, leaving an absolute, suffocating void in the grand venue. The seated guests remained frozen in their pews, whispering frantically among themselves while casting sideways glances at the altar. Maya stood motionless beneath the sprawling white floral arch, her off-the-shoulder lace wedding gown feeling less like a garment of celebration and more like a heavy shroud. Her hands gripped the white bouquet so tightly that the delicate stems bruised against her trembling fingers.

The silence inside the chapel was broken only by the distant, muffled hum of traffic outside. Maya’s gaze dropped from the empty vestry door down to the altar table. Resting beside the velvet ring box was the manila envelope Marcus had tossed aside before making his theatrical exit. She remembered seeing two documents pulled from it, yet Julian and Arthur had only examined the deed and the business audit. A chilling premonition prickled along the back of her neck.

Slowly, almost fearfully, Maya stepped forward. Her heels clicked softly against the polished oak floorboards. She reached out a trembling hand and pulled the manila folder toward her. Peering from the inside flap was a third piece of paper—one that had slipped unnoticed beneath the lining during the chaotic confrontation. Maya pulled it free, her breath catching in her throat as her eyes scanned the formal letterhead at the top of the page.

It was a bank foreclosure notice, dated only two days prior. The address listed at the bottom was not her design firm, nor was it the luxury penthouse she and Julian shared. It was the address of the modest suburban home where her aging mother currently lived, a home Maya had covertly guaranteed using the exact same disputed business credit line Marcus now controlled.

“No,” Maya whispered, the word escaping her lips as a ragged gasp.

Panic surged through her veins, entirely eclipsing the heartbreak of Julian walking away. Marcus hadn’t just targeted her business or their marital residence; he had deliberately set his sights on the one person Maya loved and protected above all else. Her mother’s home was tied directly to the legal execution order resting in her trembling hands.

Before Maya could process the full, devastating scope of the trap, the side vestry door creaked open, and Julian stepped back into the room. He looked exhausted, his white tuxedo jacket unbuttoned, his eyes dark with unresolved tension. He stopped short when he saw the single sheet of paper clutched in Maya’s white-knuckled grip.

“What is that, Maya?” Julian asked, his voice flat, devoid of its previous warmth.

“What else did he leave behind for you to hide?”
