Chapter 11 - The Confrontation at ICU

The heavy double doors of the fourth-floor intensive care unit swung open with a pneumatic hiss, admitting Julian and Maya into a quiet, sterile sanctuary of beeping monitors and soft, rhythmic breathing machines. Room 402 was bathed in the dim blue light of nightfall filtering through the high windows. Eleanor Lin lay motionless against the raised hospital pillows, her frail chest rising and falling beneath a thin white blanket, her face pale and peaceful compared to the storm raging outside.

Maya rushed to the bedside, falling to her knees and gently grasping her mother’s limp, cool hand, pressing it against her tear-stained cheek.

“Mom, I’m here,” Maya whispered, her voice breaking into ragged sobs.

“I’m so sorry. I’m right here. Please wake up.”

Julian stood quietly by the doorway, his broad shoulders resting against the pale green wall, keeping a respectful distance while watching the deeply painful scene. The lingering anger and betrayal from the chapel seemed miles away, replaced by a heavy, sorrowful realization of how deeply Marcus’s toxic web had entangled the people Maya loved.

Suddenly, the quiet hum of the ICU corridor was pierced by the sound of rapid, heavy footsteps approaching Room 402. A sharp knock echoed against the open door frame, and before either Maya or Julian could turn around, a familiar, arrogant voice cut through the air.

“Well, well, well. Look at this touching family reunion,” Marcus sneered, leaning casually against the doorframe.

He was still wearing his stark white polo shirt, his dark beard framing a smirk of pure, unadulterated malice. He crossed his arms over his chest, his dark eyes sweeping over the hospital room with sickening amusement.

Maya stood up slowly from her mother’s bedside, her tear-streaked face hardening into a mask of pure, unbridled fury. She stepped away from the bed, closing the distance between herself and Marcus until they were only inches apart.

“You did this,” Maya said, her voice shaking with a rage so intense it felt cold.

“You targeted her home, you triggered her heart attack, and you used a hospital freeze just to torture me. You are a monster, Marcus.”

Marcus let out a short, mocking laugh, refusing to break eye contact.

“Business is business, Maya,” Marcus replied coldly.

“You tried to cheat me out of half a million dollars and run off with your corporate lawyer boyfriend. This is simply what happens when you cross someone who built you from the ground up. And guess what? That hospital hold won’t stay lifted forever. My lawyers filed an emergency injunction amendment twenty minutes ago.”

Before Maya could raise her hand to strike him across the face, a heavy hand firmly grasped her shoulder, pulling her back. Julian stepped directly between Maya and Marcus, towering over the ex-partner with an expression of cold, lethal calm.

“You stepped foot in a restricted hospital ward to harass a cardiac patient and her family, Marcus,” Julian said softly, his voice carrying a terrifying edge.

“That is criminal trespassing and intentional infliction of emotional distress. Turn around, walk out of this hospital right now, or I will personally ensure you spend the next five years behind bars.”
